Windows 10 pc USB port power surge

999 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Gr3iz
“Power surge on the USB port – Unknown USB Device needs more power than the port can supply. A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device.” I’ve had this pc for a while now it’s a decent pc with a gtx 1650 super and ryzen 5 processor. All of a sudden today my USB ports stop working completely, I’ve tried several solutions I’ve found and none of them worked. My mouse and headphones work, but as soon as the keyboard (ducky12mini) gets plugged in that’s where I get the error message and all of my ports stop working. Very frustrating.

I believe this keyboard has LED lights? If so, do you have a plain keyboard that you can use to see if you get the same issue? If you do not, then i suspect your keyboard has a short or trying to get too much power from the USB.
yes, my keyboard has led lights, however I've been using this keyboard for a long time and I'm only getting this power surge now. What do you think the solution would be for this?
Do you by chance have an asus motherboard?
no, gigabyte a320m-s2h-cf

Electronic devices can go bad over time. If you are able to test the port with a different keyboard then you can determine if the keyboard is bad, or the motherboard (usb ports).
OK, first there is something you need to understand. That motherboard is an entry level board ie is it not designed for any type of performance and as such, it uses lower end parts. The problem may be that since your board is now approx 5yr old, it may just be reaching its EOL.

With that said, there is one thing you might want to give a try. There is a utility on the support page that increases usb power. This is for charging cell phones, tablets, whatever. Here is a link to the support page for your board;
GA-A320M-S2H (rev. 1.x) Specification | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global
Under the utility section of download, you will find ON/OFF charge. This can be installed after you install app center ie both must be installed.

Again, this is up to you. If your board is wearing out, you may end up causing it to fail quicker SO think about if you want to pursue this option.

Maybe the keyboard (cable?) has developed a short circuit. Plugging it in would then cause a severe drain on USB current.
