Windows 10 not detecting second monitor?

909 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  managed
I am attempting to setup a second monitor to extend my first desktop, but have had no luck so far. I am not super tech savvy but can usually solve my problems by googling my issue. My second monitor doesn't have to be awesome as it will mostly be used for excel files, I just want some extra space to work with. Thank you in advance and if I can provide more information that will help please let me know!

Laptop: windows 10, intel CORE i7, intel iRIS xe graphics card
Second monitor: ativa, model name AT220H. Made in 2010 (this might be my problem). This monitor does power on.

Since my second monitor does not have an internet connection, I can't use Miracast.
I have used two different HDMI to VGA cables so I don't believe that is the issue.
Clicking the "detect" button in the multiple displays settings does not find the second monitor.
Clicking the "extend" button from the "project" settings does nothing.
All of my drivers on the laptop are updated.
I couldn't find an ativa driver download that I believed to be the correct one, but I don't have a lot of experience with downloading new drivers.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

You may need an HDMI to VGA adapter with built-in electronics, in my experience a simple cable will not work.

Something like this :- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rankie-HDM...T6RDVHJ4611&psc=1&refRID=F0EV74N6PT6RDVHJ4611
Typically using the HDMI port on the computer should autodetect and output to the monitor, but since it's VGA it may not work. The adapter may be what you need.

Do you know for sure that the HDMI port on the laptop works? Do you have a console or media player that is connected to a TV that you can use the HDMI port for testing.

Oh wow I thought these were just adapters, not converters. That is awesome, I will give one a try and let you know if you solved it! Thank you so much!

There are cables with both connectors but may not work correctly. I had some DVI to HDMI but they didn't work because of the type.

Yes I tested the HDMI export and it does work. I will definitely be trying one of the adapters, thank you for your help!
