im thinking to either install windows 2000 or XP home or pro over my windows 98.

I have installed XP Home before but had a problem with my modem, sound and other things that didnt work correctly.

i presume that the sound and modem didnt work because of drivers?

the only thing is, to see what drivers work to install xp, if they dont, i cannot download any more because the modem will not work.

its a Packard Bell, Pentium III with 128mb RAM.

Graphics : 3dfx Voodoo 3
Sound : PCI1288-Q3D II (NX) PCI Audio (i think that's what its called)
Modem : Intel HaM Data Fax Voice Modem

If anyone could help me from this info it will be apreaciated.

cheers

Two things come to mind:

1) Never a good idea to upgrade - better off with a fresh install;

2) If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Judging by the txt file and your current specs, I'm not entirely sure you would derive any benefit from a new OS.

Is there a particular reason you want to upgrade?

I recommend you don't upgrade because you really don't have the hardware needed. You will not be happy with the performace either if you are able to get all the drivers needed. I would stay with Windows 98SE, which is a very good operating system and it does not have all the security headaches.

Well, I'm sure someone else will pop in with their two cents, but IMHO you might get a bigger performance boost with an increase in RAM....leaving Win98 intact.

Some more RAM, a good disk cleanup, and defrag will probably achieve more...

Hope this helps,

With only 128 of ram, xp would not really run very well. Win2k runs acceptably with 128 of ram. Your modem seems to be a winmodem; those are somewhat problematic at best. If you really want to install win2k [and no driver is available for win2k] you might want to consider a hardware modem.

As to upgrade or clean install, win9x>win2k or xp does not work very well. A clean install would be best.

As it was posted above; if there is no real reason to upgrade os, I would leave it alone.

ok cheers, ill stick with 98se.

I do have 2 extra 128mb sticks of ram. The problem with those are that they seem to just give me errors on my computer whenever i have tried them in with the original one.

If you are getting errors when you install the ram with win9x, you will have more with either win2k or xp. NT based os are much more demanding of ram than win9x ever was.
