Hi,
I have a spyware/adware that keeps popping up pages when I surf the web with Internet Explorer or FireFox. Most of the ads are for WinAntivirusPro, but some are for other sites like www.errorsafe.com.

I saw the previous post about this, but could not apply the fix (the files listed for fixing in HijackThis were not availabe for me). Here is my HijackThis profile, could you help me by telling me what to do next?

Welcome to TSG.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 .
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
• When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

You have multiple infections that will produce popups. Lets eliminate SmitFraud first, then Winantivirus.

I think you are confusing me with aerialspring, another user who posted his problems after mine. I ran VundoFix and it found problems and fixed them. I am the original poster who just had to update Java and the WinAntiVirusPro problem. Should I now do all the things you recommended to AerialSpring? This is kinjiki again, the original poster who updated the java and then got rid of WinAntiVirusPro. I did the last steps you mentioned, deleting those files using hijackthis and then running killbox, atf-cleaner and pandascan.

I pasted the hijackthis below. The pandascan is in the next message. Also, you asked me to tell you if I got the PendingFileRenameOperations message when I did the previous task -- I did not get this message, but everything else seemed to go okay.

Looks like I now have some new adware/spyware installed. How can I get rid of these?

• Save it to a new folder on your desktop
• Open the new folder and unzip the file hoster.zip
• Run Hoster.exe
• If your host file is marked as "read only", click the button "Make Hosts Writable"
• Click the "Restore Original Hosts" button
• Click OK to restore the original Hosts file
• Click OK
• Close The Hoster

Download ComboFix from Here or Here. to your Desktop.

Reboot to Safe mode:

Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Perform the following actions in Safe Mode.

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confirmation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the Paste Full Path of File to Delete box.

My computer seems to be okay, no more popup windows, but SpySweeper does give me warnings that it is blocking attempts to do things (I don't know what those are). I ran a Pandascan (after the previous steps but before running the latest suggestion, and it says that I still have three infections), do I need to do something about these files?:

Run Killbox.exe. Paste the following location into Killbox. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click YES and it will reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jstmeknn.dll

If the computer does not restart, manually restart the computer.

Post a fresh Hijackthis log and let me know How is the computer doing?

Hope you are having a great weekend. I did the killbox on that file and restarted my computer. The HijackThis log is pasted below.

Well, the pop-up problem now appears to be gone -- thanks so much!!!!! I couldn't have done it without your help.

However, now the computer seems to be running very very slowly. It takes about 15 sec to load up a web page where before it used to take only 1-2 sec. Also, it takes a long time to run other applications. This seems to be a new event since fixing the popup problem.

Do you have any ideas what I should do next?

• Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and allow to run the express scan
• This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
• Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
• Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
• Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
• Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
• When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  
• If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
  
• This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
• After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
• Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
• Close Dr.Web Cureit.
• Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
• After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
