Win2K service pack issues/virii?

Hello everyone.

Ok, got an interesting little puzzle. I searched the net far-n-wide, but haven't yet found the EXACT same set of symptoms.

Win2K, after all latest updates have gone through. All running an AV of some sort.
Out of no where:

- Control Panel's icons show up on far left of the CP window, with a scroll bar (almost like looking at a website with frames).

- Add/Remove Programs is now empty

- Unable to send mail through any client (get a low system memory error-on a base load of Win2K with 512MB's RAM in one case)

- Unable to add printer (getting system resources low error)

- Unable to get to windowsupdate.MS.com (page comes up as a blank)

- all non-essential windows programs cease to function (all get a low system memory error--Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Windows Media Player, ICQ etc) except for IE/Notepad/Word. Stranger note on this one is that all other MS Office products won't work except for Word??

-Symantecs NAV ceases to function. Live update doesn't try to connect, and the interface to start a manual scan becomes null/blank.

Was able to perform a AV scan from housecall.AV.com, which brings up a clean result.

So far, 6 machines: 4 at work, mine at home, and a clients laptop, have all had these EXACT same symptoms in the last month. Only fix was to format so far. Now I'm sitting on the clients laptop, everything already backed up and scanned for virii.....

Has anyone seen this? Is there an easy fix? The laptop was JUST loaded with Win2K 2 weeks ago! ;) Is this viral, or an issue with one of the Service Packs/Updates from M$

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

See if you can get any of the systems over to Panda's online virus scan for another scan.

I've had Panda pick up things Housecall missed completely.
Thanks for the reply.....I have done this scan, to no avail.

I also tried Microtrends Officescan (Corp edition).....

Any other suggestions? I'm more thinking it's a Windowz update gone bad m'self....
repair install is what I had to do once :

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows 2000 CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows 2000 now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows 2000 is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows 2000.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Thats it, you have done a repair install. Cheers

He is running Win2k.
You can try the repair install of win2k. Note you will loose service pack, hot fixes, patches, etc. All data and programs should remain the same. After doing a repair install, download and run the network [full version] install of sp4. I have seen quite a few problems when people use the express install.

Now that the service pack is installed, you should reinstall your mb / chipset drivers.

As with any major operation, backup anything you want to keep to another hd or removable media.

Now whats the difference from my post to yours except the words xp ?

Oh ..and while i'm at it , the chipset drivers will stay intact.
Chipset drivers such as via, sis, will be overwritten by windows native drivers. In the case of xp, it has native via support, however they are old drivers; I believe they are version 4.32. That is why you must reapply them.
