I have a Compaq Presario that has an internal video card on the motherboard. I have just installed a new video card ( Jaton Video-118PCI-64DDR-TV) as my original card that is part of my motherboard quit working properly. I disabled the old card, installed the new one, and was able to get my computer to boot up properlyl to my desktop. However, I have also been having problems with my sound card (never worked right after I my system crashed last spring). Just tonight I was able to download a fix for my sound card via Windows update. I installed the fix but when I rebooted my computer got to the screen with the W2K logo that says "Starting Windows 2000" and has the blue status line. The line will get all the way to the end and I will hear the windows start up music, but the screen never moves past the windows start up screen. Also, I couldn't get the system to boot in Safe Mode. However, if I hit F8 during start up and selected "enable VGA mode" it will start but everything is all distorted. Any suggestions? If I am not being clear or you need more info, I'll do my best with providing what information I know. Thanks for all your help!

Not sure if I can help but I'll try. From what you say its eems the problem started after you updated your sound drivers.

Try the following:

Press F8 when the bootup screen shows.
Select the Last Known Good and see if that works (it never has for me!)

If that doesnt work boot again and press F8. Logon as the local admin and disable your sound card. You can do that by right clicking my computer and selecting manage. Select Device manager and disable the sound items.

Have a look in the event viewer too and see if there are any error messages. The fact that you cant see anything from the bootup screen suggests it could be a problem with your video card. Have you got the latest drivers for it? Do you have another card you could try?

Go to the manufacturers of your audio and video cards for the proper/latest drivers. D/l'ing hardware drivers from the MS update site IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.

I think I have it all figured out. The problem with downloading from the manufacturer is that I can't find any paper work on my computer and the video and sound cards are both on the motherboard so we can't find the manufacturer. If I go to Compaq's website I can't download drivers because the components are the same, but my original operating system was ME not 2000. So, compaq's drivers are for my components that are working with ME or 98 OS. But, I like I said, I think I have it figured out as everything seems to be working properly. Thanks!

Hi,

Something like this happened to me before. What it was was that windows still was booting to the other video card as that one was in your default user profile. Luckily I was able to remove the other video card (I wanted to do dual displays) and restart my system. Looks like booting to safe mode might be your best way. There might be a document somewhere on the web or in Compaq support on a jumper you may need to change to fully disable your old/integrated video card.
