Win2000 BIg Time Trouble

Hello All,

I just upgraded from 98 to 2000 Pro. I now can not access the Add/Remove programs feature. All I get is a blank screen where the programs should be listed. I installed Service Pack 4 in hopes this was why I could not add or remove programs and also why Norton Anti Virus 2003 would not install. But now I can not see some web sites that I was able to see prior to Sevice Pack 4 was installed nor the add\remove screen. I can't seem to remove SP4 even though I saved the original setup prior to installing SP4.
I installed the MS java program per instructions from a previous post question. Still can't see the web sites.
Also when I try to run HiJack this, it trys to install AOL 8.0 on my computer.

Any help will be appreciated.

Just as a general rule, you don't ever want to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. Despite what most people believe, Windows 2000 is not a good upgrade for an OS like 98 because they're two completely different OS's. I would do a full format and do a clean install of Windows 2000. Even if you manage to fix all the problems you're having now, you will most likely experience driver conflicts and other associated issues in the future. In this case, I think it's best to start off fresh.

skinnywhiteboy is correct. These two Os's are based on completely different kernels and Win2k is not in the upgrade path from Windows 98. Years ago I did the same thing even when I knew it was not right and I paid for it.

There also the time issue to consider. You can spend days or even weeks troubleshooting all these problems. You can have a fresh install of Windows 2000 done within an hour. Of course you will have to reinstall all of your programs, but that's a small price to pay.

I have about decided the same thing, I am going to reformat the HD and start over.

I have been at this for 3 days now and I have had enough of this.
