this is about my mom's computer. emachine t1801 800 mhz, 20 gig, 128 ram, win me, 56k modem. no firewall, hasnt updated spybot or adaware in over a year. She's complaining her computer is running too slow, takes too long to load any pics or graphics from the web, download speed is around 1.25k/s.
I updated spybot and adaware and removed about 20 malware/spyware etc. She has only the very basic of programs on the machine and even very few files & pictures, however when I checked her available memory she only had like 175k of the 128 meg available. Scandisk stopped and started 10x due to programs writing to it and defrag won't run until scandisk fixes the disk errors. Tried to run it in safe mode but got the same results. checked msconfig and there doesn't seem to be any excessive/unnecessary programs running. Also deleted all 3200 of her cookies still no improvement. would registry scan and repair help? what else can i do besides get her zonealarm. She does have norton which does run regularly. HELP!
She just wants to buy another computer but this one should be sufficient for her minimal needs, email, and occasional surfing.
Thanks, John

Hi,
From what you say I think you need to post a HijackThis log and then wait for someone qualified (gold shield next to their name) to take you through what needs to be done. Please go no further than the steps below and posting your results for now.You may want to print off this guide just in case.

Using Hijackthis with the self-installer that puts it into Program Files for you:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Once you've done this, hang on for further guidance.

The benefits or otherwise of using registry cleaners / registry fixers elicits mixed views. Hopefully these links will illustrate this:

However, everyone is agreed that before going down this route - should one choose to - a full back-up beforehand is vital.

I'm sure others will also post their views but I hope my contribution has helped you?

Richard.

John:

Windows ME and its associated apps are much happier with 256 MB or more of RAM. Add at least another 128 MB.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are probably too many programs running in the background. Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup" tab. Other than startup entries for

ScanRegistry

SystemTray

StateMgr

Antivirus program entries

very few other entries, if at all, need to run in the background. After you edit the startup list and reboot, a "selective startup" window will appear. Ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it and then click OK.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder and then delete all files and folders from inside that TEMP folder. If that computer also has a C:\TEMP folder, do the same thing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Post a HijackThis log, as requested.

Thanks guys, I've already downloaded hjt onto my machine and will probably post a log for it although I don't seem to be experiencing any major problems ( yet ). I'll be at my mom's Sunday and do the same for her machine and hopefully get down to the bottom of her troubles.
