Win 98se Loses Connection To Sound Drivers

1661 Views 27 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  THEROACH
After using (playing music) for a short time (1 hr) , I lose connection with my sound drivers , and have to reconnect .
I have never experienced this problem before . But it seems to have started after I wiped the hard drive and re-installed .
Any ideas , from your collective genius ?

Hi, Does this happen when you are online, or just in Windows?
What media player are you using and version of it?
Are you playing burned CDs, bought CDs, or radio or other type of music files?

Try to answer this, too: If you could go into the Device manager and post exactly what shows under Sound, Video, game controllers that might help, and check the version of the drivers you are using for the sound card there (Properties>Driver>Driver Details) that is how you would do it in 98SE....
Also, see what is happening in the Multimedia section from Control Panel>Multimedia

what are the playback devices listed?

any yellow !!!! marks in the Device manager anyplace?
May simply need to update sound card drivers....to do that, we have to know the exact device make and model and your present drivers. Post back!
Hello there ; thanks for your response .
It doesn't seem to matter if I'm on-line or not . I have Media Player 9 and have not really tried using CD's , so I cannot answer that one at this time . I don't know if it happens in Nero Media Player either , sorry . The Sound Drivers are VIA AC'97 AUDIO CONTROLLER & WAVE DEVICE FOR VOICE MODEM . Playback device is VIA AUDIO (WAVE) . I have not noticed any yellow marks anywhere . I hope this is sufficient info for you much needed help , thanks again !!
Hi, Thanks for quick reply....after the reinstall, you loaded sound drivers from a CD you have, either a Restore CD or a separate CD you have with the system, right?
If you have downloaded drivers from the Net- are you sure they were for the sound chip (you have onboard sound) that is right for your motherboard/system?
What exactly are you playing- like MP3 files, radio?
I re-installed off of a CD that came w/ the system .
I am playing mostly mp3 and wma files . The time period varies sometimes it last a couple of hours , then after the first time I lose my Drivers , it seems to happen more regularly . It's pretty mysterious,( to me anyway).
HI- Would like you to post a list of your IRQs type in the RUN box from Start button msinfo32....rest of directions below.
Here is how> it is in a previous reply by Rollin Rog, just scroll down a few replies to see the instructions for msinfo32....copy and paste the list of IRQs that way, OK?

Good Morning ; Yes , I've tried that once , but I don't recall looking for duplicates . I will try this when I get off work . ( I'm supposed to be working )
Thanks for your help . Take Care.

What do you do to 'reconnect?' I'm also curious to see the IRQ listing too.
I RECONNECT TO THE DRIVERS BY GOING INTO MY COMPUTER ..DRIVERS ..HIGHLIGHT SOUND DEVICE .. REMOVE ..THEN RE-BOOT. THE COMPUTER FINDS AND RECONNECTS AUTOMATICALLY . IS THIS THE WRONG WAY ??
HELLO , AcaCandy , GRACIOUS !
Well, I guess I wouldn't call that reconnecting then......could you post the IRQ listing please?

De Nada ;)
If the drivers are disapearring on their own then it's not an IRQ conflict. Go to the manufacturers website and obtain the latest drivers for the device. It could be that the drivers you keep re-installing from the CD have been bug-fixed in the latest release.
AS SOON AS I GET TO MY COMPUTER , THANKS AGAIN .

AND FRANK , SOMEONE ELSE TOLD ME THE SAME THING , IF THAT'S THE CASE WHAT DO I DO ?
Hi, I would advise you to try and post the IRQ list....
If your computer is a brand name like Compaq, Gateway etc go to the support site for the brand, find the area to search for your system model....you should see a downloads area there for files for your system. If the machine was put together by a shop....use the drivers for the make and model of motherboard in the computer....if you dont know that, post back and we can direct you to a good program to ID the hardware- AIDA32 its free and a very detailed utility.

If you have time, have a look here: VIA page for drivers
directions, etc....http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=69

When you have time, post back with any info you can find about the motherboard or system make and model....
if its not a laptop- you can very often see the motherboard make/model and revision number by just looking all over the board itself....AIDA32 should also be able to tell you the make and model....possibly not the revision number, but it is almost always printed on the board, just a pain to find it....OK?

Doesn't look like anything is IRQ sharing with the sound......per chance, does a reboot fix the problem too, without actually removing the sound card?
I think you are just flat running out of resources. When you lose the sound, right click on my computer, properties, performance and see what shows as resources.
That should be adequate, and if you just restart whatever program you were using for sound, does it come back or not? Also, how much ram do you have? When you loose sound, can you look at start, run, msinfo32 and hit ok.....go to software, running tasks, compare that with when you first startup.
Yes , when I restart ,the sound returns , but the time period seems to shorten before sound loss . I've never checked the ram , I will certainly check it next time this occurs . Thanks for your help and your time . It's appreciated .;)
