Hello,

My good computer is currently being serviced so I am using my pretty old spare computer. It's got Win 98 on it and only 96 MB ram. I noticed it was really slow so I started cleaning it up and did some windows updates (mainly security and one driver). I also deleted temp files, and all the regular stuff that should be done, scan, defrag, etc.

I got the system to run at 77% and when I first started it was at 36%....very sloooow.

So anyhow, I have been doing this for the past two days and making sure to reboot often etc, well now for some reason my downloads won't work. I am trying to get the freeware program adaware to scan and see what is on here but it will not work. When I click on the link to download it the regular download box that normally opens doesn't...all that I can see is a message on the bottom of internet explorer that shows a red arrow like it is trying to open a download. After about 1-5 mins the page turns into a blank page and a little square box shows up in the corner...much the same as if you were looking at graphics and your browser could not find the graphic. I've tried it with several different sites and the same thing is happening.....yet yesterday it did download a program for me called orphans remover that I got from the nonags site. (awesome site btw)

So since I am only really familiar with win 95 and getting pretty good at xp I am not sure where in the settings to look for this on this system running 98.

Yikes I need help. :-(

Do you recall which upgrades you downloaded? There was one M$ update that did have an adverse affect on IE, but off hand I can't recall which one. I thought it was removed from the M$ upgrade site several months ago when the fix came out.

Well like I said I upgraded and installed updates. Sooooo Ie 6 is what I now have.

I installed 17 critical updates and no I can't list them (lol) and one driver upgrade and then a couple windows ones....(there was over 40 listed but about 25 of them were for differents languages, dutch, chinese, finish etc etc, crazy the list it gave really. Anyhow I made sure to read through the regular windows upgrades before installing them and they seemed pretty standard. I think one was for direct x and two were just cumlitive patches. I can look if you really think this will help.

I did not install anything really big except for the ie service pack which was actually in the critical update list (I think that one took 1 hour 4 mins).

Can someone please tell me what in the advanced settings I can look for that affects how downloads start and are controlled!!!??? I am running WIN 98...if you did not read the previuos post...although I wish whomever posts would read my first post as well.

Any suggestions? Questions?

Cyber :)

Hello I am still wondering if there is a windows 98 guru out there who can suggest to me where in the settings I need to change them so that when you start downloads that you are given the option of where to save it or to open it from location......

BTW I did get the files that I was trying to download. I had to go into the temporary folder and then move the executable files and then install the program. No idea what I changed in IE to make this happen.

Idea anyone???

To restore your download preferences,
click tools
internet options
advanced
check the box that states "notify when downloads complete"

retry the download

A couple of ideas for you.

First you may have screwed the pooch by not rebooting enough when doing gobs of updates. You had to pay very close attention and reboot when it told you too. In general you don't do all those language updates unless you have a particular reason. You only can do so many updates in a gulp.

As noted the bulk of the settings you want are in Internet Explorer. You get to it by clicking on Tools, or right click on the IE Icon, then Properties or via the control panel.

In your particular situation right now, I would try first using your ISP support service. Works best by getting on line, on the phone with them, telling them what you have done, letting them see if there are any fixs at their end and then walking you step by step thru a proper configure of your system as they see it.

Depending on your ISP and the level of support can work wonders. Ensure you have your Win98 disk handy before hand.
After that exercise, then I would plunge off on my own to fix anything that still doesn't seem to work. Depending on the Tech you get can take around 1/2 - hour to try various combo's. Will do a whole range of checks. After they fix one problem, ask them to help you tune up to max.

I have found you normally do more harm flipping settings by yourself than good.
