A friend of mine is trying to connect his WIN98 machine to the wireless router via a PCI card. He has been unsuccessful with connecting so far, and I was wondering if Win98 might be the problem? I recall seeing numerous posts on the board about WiFi issues with Win98, is there any truth to that?

I told him that there is most likely a configuration problem with the PCI card, but would double check on the Win98 compatibility issue.

Thanks.

i Had an old computer with Windows 98se running on it and it had wireless. I have heard nothing about Windows 98 being incompatible with wireless networks. Check to make sure that the drivers are right for the PCI card.

Unfortunately I don't have a direct answer, but I can tell you the following...

We have two very old toshiba satellite pro win98 laptops running fine with 11Mps pcmcia cards and a wireless access point plugged into the hub.

It took a bit of fiddling with settings and IP config to get them to see the network - but win 98 is always a bit funny like that - once working they were both superb.

We found two interesting quirks. There are 4 WEP key options in the laptop wireless settings. The WEP key only works in position 1 (WEP key 1).

Also, we had to upgrade the bios on both the laptops to get the pcmcia wireless card working.

I hope this is of some small help!!

I have had my self self 4 98 machines that were wireless that did work ...but it was also a big issue to find the drivers which of course 98 did not have ...so that might be a start also from what everyone else said too.

Thanks for your replies.

My friend also had a laptop with a PCMCIA card and it connected automatically to the router without a hitch. I will most likely have to stop by his house and work on it myself and see if I can get it up and running since he has had so many issues setting it up. Thanks again for your opinions/answers!
