I am building a server for storage and internet access. I have a cool case with 8 slots for HDs. I plan on running a 6 year old mobo running an AMD 3800+ CPU. I have a raid card and plan on starting out with 4 hard drives.

I know nothing of linux but think I want to start learning it. I am looking for suggestions on which OS to run this setup and how to go about learning it?

Thanks

Well if you never use linux I will suggest to use ubuntu desktop version they have nice GUI and you can du lot of things just with clicking a mouse to learn basics about linux check how look and get feel and learn about commands. If you feel so you know basics, best server to run linux server is redhat you can get a lot of enterprise support. To get best performance you shouldn't use any GUI and just use command line. Install apache mysql php and ssh connection and and than you can "play" around with it. And one most important thing buy or download some books about command line and linux. there are a lot of books out there which explain to you mostly everything, more than you can get from blog.
