where did my icons go?

on the task bar suddenly my quicklaunch icons on the bottom disappeared. First I don't know where or how they went but also how do I get them back? There was Outlook Express and IE and WMP and when I try to drag the shortcut nothing happens. I thought somehow there is a slider but the little handle down there doesn't seem to want to move to the right and none of the property settings give me any clues.
