Ive been using windows since I was 3, I finally switched to linux about a year ago, and im loving it, but now i would like to know where i can find a decent Unix OS to play around with and see where the linux roots came from, so if you could tell me where to find Unix id be much abliged :)

a university you go to :). That's about the only spot you'll actually find a unix system that you don't have to spend a pretty penny on to buy :).

In essence, unless you are willing to pay the licencing fee you arent going to get a UNIX system. However as an alternative, i can suggest this: Look into the following.
-FreeBSD- Its port system is considered the "inspiration" for Gentoo's portage.
--Slackware- Slackware purports itself to be the most "UNIXy" linux distro out there
---The other BSDs (Net, Open, Dragonfly). The BSD code base was one of the "Original Unixes"

well considering one of the major influences/creators of the ports system is behind portage in gentoo. Its not surprising that they are very similar in style.
