Your question is about as broad and non-specific as I've never seen. SAP is a huge software company. There's no way you're going to find answers to those questions here or anywhere.

My exposure to SAP has enlightened me that it is usually a multi-million dollar implementation, and any modifications to modules can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, it is the realm of specialists but is a very reputable and robust platform, designed for larger corporations.

The installations I have had exposure to cost upwards of $100,000,000 dollars to implement.

As alluded to above, given the "mainframe" type environment I doubt that any useful help would be available here.

Hi yakudn
I hope you've not been put off by the replies to your request for info. Don't give up, but try to be a bit more specific with your request.
Read This:-
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

I suspect that beneath the irony there's quite a lot of useful knowledge to be gained from people with various (OK, yeah mainly bad - is there any other kind?) experiences of SAP. My personal experience has been far too peripheral to be able to give you any more detailed advice than "don't go there"

Guys,
I think, joshing apart, we all know what yadukn means by SAP!

Unless I'm mistaken he/she wants to know more about the (alleged) accounting package beloved of so many of our (UK) gov orgs and QUANGOs.
That being the case, virtually all of the replies are totally appropriate :D - I particularly liked
* fool: a person who lacks good judgment
* run down: deplete; "exhaust one's savings"; "We quickly played out our strength"
* excavate the earth beneath
Contact me privately, and I will give you the details of my bank account - you'd be better putting the money in there, or even slinging it down a hole in the ground.

While I agree that this is not the forum to get the type of application knowledge that is being requested, the "old" SAP product (R2) was mainframe (IBM) based, but it's predecessor (R3 and whatever is being delivered today) is client-server based.

The vendor is definitely SAP but they offer a variety of solutions. The most common is a financial (accounting) implementation. But in this case the OP is interested in another module, Production Management.

That, if I may be so bold as to say so, is the basic problem. Any fool can write a straightforward accounting package, and many did so.

But then a number of big names started doing bolt on packages in specialist areas of which they had no knowledge, which may have been fine for small scale companies, but were totally beyond their area of expertise for larger scale organisations. And the companies for which these solutions were suitable could not possibly justify the enormous costs.
