Where are you typing this? If it is in the "Run" window, I'm not sure that you want the word "type" before command.com. If you are trying to get to a command prompt in DOS just type "command". Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are trying to do.

I was in DOS when I tried to restore my "command interpreter".

The "type" command in DOS is used to see the contents of a file. Since "command.com" is not a text file, all one would see is some kind of ASCII representation of the data that the file is made of. Most of these characters would appear as gibberish!
