my husband was working at the comp when a window popped up saying that we had malware and trojans and we had to run securityav_2004_br5.exe to get rid of them. there were also flashing messages under each item in the 'My Computer' dialogue box saying how many trojans and viruses we supposedly had in each section of our computer. it was obviously a scam type program but i havent been able to find any information on this program that would help. both my husband and i ran the Trendmicro antivirus scan which came up empty. any help with this would be greatly appreciated. i was also wondering if it would be a good idea to buy Malwarebytes rather than using Spybot as we are doing?
thanks in advance and Happy New Year to the team at TSG :)

Happy New Year to you :)

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Overall the log looks okay. The only visible questionable item is GamesBar - Do you use that?

Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

Close HijackThis and reboot. Post a new log.

Also, I would agree and ditch SpyBot and get MalwareBytes. It's a much better program. There is a free and paid version.

thank you so much for taking the time to do this Cheeseball81. we really appreciate it.:) i will for sure buy Malwarebytes now, since i've heard lots of good stuff about it. :) thanks for the confirmation.
here is the log after fixing the errors and rescanning. i removed the gamesbar thingy because altho i use it, it hasnt been functioning very well [which makes sense if the file's missing]
thanks again. TSG is the best and most user friendly tech support forum i've used. a very happy and successful new year to all who help out here.:)

You're very welcome

There's still a GamesBar entry remaining.

Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

O2 - BHO: GamesBarBHO Class - {CB0D163C-E9F4-4236-9496-0597E24B23A5} - I:\Program Files\GamesBar\2.0.1.59\oberontb.dll

Close HijackThis and reboot.

Make sure this folder is deleted: I:\Program Files\GamesBar

Glad you are getting MalwareBytes. It's a great program.

Anything else you need help with? :)
