Actually, MP3 files and piles of sand have similar characteristics. Every time you move it (convert in the case of MP3), a little bit of sand gets left behind. Any conversion to/from MP3 in any flavor loses a bit of the quality in the process.
I've done this experiment with JPG files, but it's equally valid for any lossy compression scheme. Compress/decompress an MP3 to WAV and back about 50 times and see what you end up with, it's not pretty!
