I'm messing around with some old parts, Asus A7V133 mb is having a strange problem. I have it set up with a Pata HDD on ide prim and a cdrom on ide sec, normal stuff, when i try to load win2000 it gets to a part when it has to load some files from the cd and it cant because the cdrom is gone, it shows up in the bios fine it boots from it to start the setup but when it gets to this part its gone, and if I continue with the setup and get to windows it doesnt show up in my computer. Bad sec channel you say, ok, however if I go into safe mode, its there, reg win, not there. The only way i was able to load win2000 was to put both drives on the prim ide cable, in fact its the onlt way the pc with run. It cant seem to boot from the sec ide except for loading safe mode, and if I put a cdrom on it it wont show up in regular windows.

BTW this mb comes with an additional set of ide channels maked ATA100 prim & sec, but I havent a clue how to get them to show up in the bios, also read where they are for Raid0/1 setup or for extra pata drives, however if i cant boot from them they will do me no good.

I believe the Promise controller can be disabled via a jumper and in the BIOS. But he drives attached to it will not show up in the mobo's BIOS but rather in the seperate Promise BIOS thats loads shortly afterwards. Make sure you load the Promise drivers in Windows or during setup. I don't it liked optical drives on the Promise controller though.

But your secondary IDE may be faulty.

You may want to try updating the BIOS: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A7V133&type=map&mapindex=1

yeah, was thinking of flashing the bios, i guess i dont quite understand how the ide can work fine not in windows, and even in safe mode but wont function in full windows. Found a review of the A7V133 where the guy had the same issue with the prim channel doing the same thing, had to have the hdd and optical on the sec ide to run the test. I know at one point it was working normal, long time ago.

Make sure to install Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000 and the VIA 4-in-1 Chipset drivers.
it is w2k with sp4, but not sure about the via4in1, problem is this happens before you even get the os on the hdd all the way, got more playing around with it to try, hate to give up on this mb, since i finally ran across some pc133, wasnt about to buy any.
It was funny because the other sub plot was I tried to see what putting a soc A sempron 2400+ would do in this mb, it fires up, posts but thats as far as you get, cant get it to boot to any drives or the bios.

thats for sure;)
guess i was thinking that if it made the post beep maybe it was happy, but no, I have a chaintech soc A 200/266 fsb, DDR2100 that runs fine with the Sempron, it sees it as a XP throughbred core i think and of course runs it at a slower 266, instead of 333
