My web site host is a real a--hole, but for certain reasons I have to stay with him a while. I need to find a program for designing our site, including the main menu and multiple pages, that will operate on his platform, which is NOT Microsoft. I believe it's Unix.

He says a Microsoft program like Front Page is not supported by his server, but Netscape's HTML Editor is supported. I can't find anything on Netscape's web site called the HTML Editor, though (maybe it comes with the whole Netscape package only.)

Can I please get advice on web site building programs to use, especially with my being a novice (but very experienced with computers in general, at least under Windows).

What works with Unix? (I think he's also mentioned that he uses Appache??? I'll have to ask... but I know it's NOT Microsoft.)

Does the full Netscape package pose any conflict problems with Windows 98Se and IE 5.01?

What can I get for designing a basic, professional-looking, text-oriented site that will not take much learning time or cost much?

Thanks!

First off,
if your hostis using Unix/Linux and apache you are better off than him using Microsoft products. As far as webservers go Apache is the BEST, and it runs better on Unix/Linux than under Windows.

Next,
You don't want frontpage anyhow. It creates horrible code and is a b!tch to maintain. If you are writing the pages I suggest you check out some sites like http://www.wdvl.com, http://www.webmonkey.com et al and learn how to write HTML, Javascript, vbScript, and CSS so you can do the page correctly. If you need the server side processing that Frontpage gives you . Ask your host if they support PHP (http://www.php.net) or Perl (http://www.perl.com) and you can will be able to find scripts allready written to do what you need.

For an editor I highly suggest Allaire Homesite (http://www.allaire.com) but if you want a free product get 1stPage 2000 from (http://www.evrsoft.com).
