for about the last week, the net connection keeps dropping out, i'll be browsing the internet and suddenly pages refuse to open, and messenger signs me out. it'll usually be up again within about 30 seconds-1 min, but the odd thing is the Xbox360 stays connected to Live throughout, although several of my friends say my voice breaks up a bit when the pc loses connection. it's not specific to my pc either, the laptop does it as well. i'm using a Linksys WAG54GS with the latest firmware. also, since this has begun, Outpost has been logging some rather unusual alerts --> http://www.simonweald.com/outpost_log.jpg i don't know whether these two things are in any way related? Thanks in advance.

Try running a ping test from your router (login to the admin page and on the administration tab, you should see a diagnostics option, then ping.)

Set it to run a large number of pings, so you can see if the problem is actually with the router (which it seems it is).

If the router runs OK, then it may actually be a problem with your ISP.

If all else fails, try contacting Linksys - 1-800-LINKSYS (even for India, their tech support is pretty good), or your ISP.

do you have dsl or cable internet

if dsl make sure your phone lines have good connections and that nothing has damaged a line to the computer. also with DSL certain cordless phones can cause signal loss like this. I forget which mega herz models do that but you can rule it out by unplugging the base for the phone and then removing the battery from the cordless.

all else fails you could run Hijack This and post the results to see if there is an infection.

Redoak,
my limited understanding of a ping test is that it has the computer send out packets and then waits for the response. if there is a proper ship and recieve so to speak then it rules out the ISP being the problem.

Which brings to another thought which would be to take the router out of the equation to eliminate that as a source of the problem.

I've already run the ping test, no problems there, the pings vary between 24 and 40ms, until the net crash occurs, when they time out. also done a tracert, same results. I thought i'd solved it last night as the combination of my torrent client and Outpost seemed to be causing the problems; just got in from work and the usual happened again when i went to check my email, so that wasn't the root of the problem. checked the phone lines, they're not the issue. here's my hijackthis log http://www.simonweald.com/hijackthis.txt i try and keep it nice and clean, some of the stuff on there isn't necessary, but my machine can handle it.

ah ok, i didn't think you'd want it cluttering up the forum.
