AW! Man! I done the dumbest thing yesterday as I knocked over my water bottle on to my Toshiba Satellite M55 Laptop. I turned it upside down as quick as I could and started blasting with air cans and then later I tried to remove the top face of keyboard from bottom but had no luck. How ever I did open all the removable little doors and blast with air and pried the top from the bottom and blasted thru the crack. I then let it sit on the edge of my desktop desk (with elect heater under it) until this morning. Right now when I hit the ON button I can hear the dirve whirring and the message on the screen says "LOADING" and show a pic of an hour glass. the the screen turns sorta dark blue with a white line thru the middle and says "INSERT MEDIA DISK". If I put in a movie DVD it starts and shows the movie. I put the TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD, but then I get the message that my hard disk will be wiped clean so it can re-install everything. I really don't want to do that if I don't have to.
I must say that I have been punching key boards since the first TIMEX and been thru COMMODORE, etc and this is the FIRST time I ever spilled anything on a keyboard. I'm 70 now and on 24 oxygen so I'm getting a lot more computer on time. I guess I got tangled with my O2 pipe cord or something.
So is there wnything I can do short of erasing my hard disk to get this thing to boot.

congrats on still banging the keyboard. the timex and c64 were
great machines. you have history.

your laptop may not be dry enough. blowing air in may have
driven some water deeper.

laptops can be diassembled but they are tricky. friend had
a spouse douse her laptop. after doing all sorts of screws
he finds that just 2 screws and 2 catches was all that was
needed to release the keyboard on his model.

sorry i don't have specific advice on your machine.

i would get it thoroughly dry before trying to repower.
it is hard to not power up and try to fix being concerned
about the machine but i think you need to wait more
and try somemore machine drying out.

"Blot up the liquid that may have gotten on the removable media"

What is meant by 'remvable media' and 'external media'
Both are mentioned in the link above.

OK chaps it is now up and running ( I did the hair dryer thing) and looks like I didn't lose anything so far. Now my BIG question is, IT has a disk drive that will also show movies DVD's, now I want to save all my data incase something happens again. I have some DVD-R 16X disks that say 2hr but don't say how much MB or GIG's I assume they hold a lot and can I use these to send all my data to. The Label also says Vieo, Photo, Data.

i don't know your machine and did not look anything up about it.

you have to see if the drive is a dvd drive (that only reads dvd
and cd disc) or a dvd reader/cd burner combo or a dvd burner.

if it is a dvd burner then you can backup your computer onto
those dvd-r disc (will hold about 4.4 GB of data).

if it is a dvd reader/cd burner combo drive then you need
cd blanks to burn to (about 700 MB)

if you have your computers networked and a dvd burner on
only one machine then you can copy files to the burner
machine and backup from there.

I am going to try to upload a listing of what my Toshiba laptop disk drive is. This is scanned from the Toshiba Satellite Resource Guide. All very confusing to me.

It writes both DVD+R and DVD-R media, as well as DVD+R dual-layer DVD's.

That lists two different drives, the first one is a DVD burner and the other isn't. Do you know which one your laptop has?

erick295, good point! I was asleep on the switch and just read the specifications for the first drive.

Download Nero Info Tool and post a screen shot of the Drive page, it'll tell you the capability of the installed drive.

OK I went and got Nero Info Tool and ran it. How do I save it to clipboard so I can paste it here. I have Printkey2000 installed and if I hit PrtSc button it will only send screen copy to printer.

I'm posting this via my desktop. The Toshiba Laptop will not wright to the DVD-R. No matter if it's a file or a folder I get the message "Windows has encountered a problem copying to disk. What would you like Windows to do?"
How am I supposed to know what I want Windows to do.
I have a movie in iTunes (CARS) that I bought from their web site and I want to save it to a disk that will play in my TV's DVD player befor this piece of crummy laptop crashes on me.
I have also posted a jpg of the ghraphic for the Nero Info Toll that I ran.

to write to a dvd-R disc you need to use a burning program like
Nero or Roxio, see if you can identify something in your program
list

you can write a single session or multisession to discs. you need
to find what program you have and read its manual. different
uses of disc (audio, video, data) can all be done with the
procedures pertaining to them.

look at your dvd standalone player manual and see what type
of dvds it can use, some can read dvd-r, some dvd+r, some
both dvd-r and dvd+r and some neither.

to save data for computer use both dvd-r and dvd+r discs
work, you can write or read data on them

also for data on computer you can use dvd-rw and dvd+rw discs,
these act like giant floppy disks which are eraseable.

This is what is listed in the iTunes readme file. iTunes has an icon in the lower right corner which is listed as being a cd-burner but when I click it to try to save the movie to the DVD-R I get the same error message about windows encountered a problem. What would you like windows to do.
