Warning About ETrust EZ Antivirus Upgrade

Earlier today, I received a message from Computer Associates to upgrade from my installed version 6.3.0.9 to the new version 7.0.0.23 because of a security issue with version 6.3 and earlier.

The install process removed version 6.3.0.9 and installed version 7.0.0.23. I then rebooted my computer, as instructed, to complete the installation.

Once my computer had rebooted, I discovered that version 7.0.0.23 was not working because the scanning engine and definition files were missing. I clicked the "Update" link and was advised that version 7.0.0.23 was up-to-date.

I sent Computer Associates a message and advised them of the problem, but have yet to receive a reply.

I corrected the problem by uninstalling version 7.0.0.23 and deleting its leftover folder, then reinstalling version 6.3.0.9(which I had a copy saved).

This post is to alert those who are using version 6.3.0.9 and earlier, and who have received an upgrade notice from Computer Associates.

I’ve been using CA’s My-eTrust for years. I seem to recall that they bought out the company that I was using.

My renewal date has always been in Spring. End of April I think.

I have a printout of the last renewal dated April 04, 2004. It has my new license key and customer number on it.

However, when I look at the info on my computer it doesn’t agree with that printout.

It has a different date, late August, and my customer and key numbers are different.

I have no clue how that occurred, as I’m the only user of this computer.

It seems that I’m using Version 6.1.4.0.

I’ve not been able to download an update for 5 days. I try but get an error code “Query Error”

Very interesting.

You're probably getting a "Query Error" because Computer Associates probably shows your account as expired. You should go to their website and check your account information. You'll have to log in with your e-mail address and password that you're using with the site.

I have both etrust av and firewall. I send a tech request to ca that when I have the email scanning option turned on in the AV or firewall, outlook 2003 locks up. The response from CA tech was "Send us the error code of the error" and they closed the case. The techs name was S, Sean. I have not been able to get any support from CA, it takes them days to reply and then the reply is garbage.

I agree. ETrust EZ Antivirus tech support is the pits. If version 7x doesn't pan out and work right, I'm liable to switch over to Grisoft AVG(which I understand is going to have a free edition of 7x). I'm currently using ETrust 6.3.0.9, and it works well in my 98SE and XP SP2 machines. I tried installing version 7.0.1.4, but it won't work.

Frank, I gave up on ETrust. Had an impossible time with their Tech. Support. When they did respond, I couldn't get version 7 to work. And I had just renewed my subscription in August for my wife's machine. I'll just eat the subscription price and forget about ETrust. I loaded the free version of AVG on her machine, which is working fine, and am waiting to be notified when AVG's free updated version 7 is available. ETrust is history.

Same $ renewal here, flavallee. Been using them for couple o' years but if the customers loyalty is rewarded with an inferior product... :( anyway, version 6x seems to be OK.

I seem to recall that Etrust (or Computer Associates) and Microsoft had partnered on the AV/Firewall bit...and when SP2 was released one of the partners failed to work  And Sp2 turned on XP's own meager firewall automatically. jeesh

I think that it was a known issue at the time of the initial SP2 release that EZtrust wasn't compatible with SP2 (and neither was ZoneAlarm (which I use), and many other common programs, including Norton's suite). I don't have the link handy at the moment but it was a list from MS's site. Perhaps that is fixed now with the subsequent band-aids MS released for SP2?

I haven't installed SP2.

Just received official email notice from Etrust today about availability of v. 7 Etrust antivirus. It seems to have 3.91 Mb instead of 3.90 as the original had. It has the same version number (2.11.15.0) as the original had. Is this the same file or has it somehow been updated? Anyone? :)

I had to reinstall WinXP on my computer about 2 weeks ago. I installed version 7.0.0.33 as a "clean install" (no upgrade). I've been having a problem with the e-mail scanning being OFF according to the tray icon. The first boot (say after computer has been off for a while) everything seems fine...no Red x.

If I restart the computer for some reason, which I had to do last
evening after installing some software, the Red x appears...the tray icon will say that e-mail protection is OFF, but yet the AV program status shows e-mail protection ON. I can clear the X by running the Update routine, even if there are no new updates. The x goes away and seems to stay away...until restarting the computer. I have reinstalled version 7.0.1.4 two times. I didn't uninstall version 7.0.0.33 or whatever I had first, just installed over top.

I'm running WinXP, SP2, using Windows Firewall. No other Firewall software is being used.

I would appreciate any help on

The instructions say to install version 7.0 as an upgrade over versions 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3 and not to uninstall the older version first.

Until someone verifies that version 7.0 is working alright, I'm sticking with version 6.3.

If I recall, CA said that the final release of version 7x will be released on November 1st. Let's hope the bugs are fixed by then. For now, I'm sticking with version 6.3.
Is the plethora of Emails we're all getting perhaps related to the final release dated mentioned in the information Flavalle got?

Starship, I think you are probably correct about the release date of EZ antivirus (email notification). And the version number has changed(from 7.0.33 to 7.0.1.4). As the original version of 7.0 seems to be working ok, I think I will just keep this one in my download folder and continue to use the first one. :)

I have had the problems outlined below since upgrading to EZ-AV 7.0. Does anyone know where I can obtain an older version. I'm not sure I still have it on my computer. I'm thinking of downgrading if I have this problem again..back to 6.1 or 6.2. Thanks for your help. You are welcome to call or e-mail me at mjwsjw@myway.com.

I have a "generic" computer that was built by a local computer shop. It has an Aseus motherboard with the nVidia integrated devices. I've got an AMD 1.80 Ghz processor, 512 MB RAM and of course the usual hard drives, CD-BURNER, and DVD-ROM drive. I also have a ZIP drive connected via USB. The computer was two years old in September. It originally had WinXP-Home, SP1.

Three weeks ago today my computer started doing something VERY strange. My wife powered it on of a morning like she always does (we normally shut the computer down at night). During boot-up, it hung with the opening Windows XP screen...the screen where the little bar is moving across the screen. So, I had my wife to boot into Safe Mode...and we ran Adaware, which found a few items...took care of those...and the computer rebooted. I was relieved...

It lasted a day...2 days later...the problem happened again. This time, I ran the WinXP Repair option. Again...the problem went away...and lasted 2 days. This same thing happened again...no kind of error message...no clue as to the problem. It just hangs on that opening screen. I decided in this case to apply SP2 and see what that would do. Well...it didn't help at all. It hung in the same spot immediately after installing SP2.

At this point, I decided it was time to clean the hard drive off, do a fresh install of Windows and also install the latest nVidia drivers. I decided I would also install SP2. I did all of that just over 2 weeks ago. The computer has been working great...everything seeming to be fine. No errors with any of the devices...just nice bootups and shutdowns, etc., until...

This morning...out of the clear blue...the problem was back. The exact same thing happened! No errors...no clues...no bootup. It booted up once and I installed an update to my virus program and decided to reboot...and that is where it hung.

This time...I decided to boot into the Safe Mode...uninstall the nVidia package of drivers...and reinstall the nVidia package. This seemed to get it back to a working state (I booted it up 2 or 3 times without problems). However, I'm very frustrated and discouraged...and clueless on how to fix this so it won't happen again.

Needless to say...the computer always shuts down fine...no kinds of errors or hang ups that we know of. Even trying to boot into the "last good configuration" mode always fails.

Would you have any thoughts or suggestions that you could give me?

Thanks in advance,
Michael Wright

Look, I'm not trying to be smart or anything, but I have installed EZ antivirus v. 7 on my wife's Dell Dimension 4100 computer, on a friend's Dell 4100 (both running Win98Se), and on a friend's HP computer(running WinXPSp1). In two cases the computers were running Norton and the system resources were taxed. In all three cases I had NO problem installing v. 7 (the latest release).
I do have a question though. In today's edition of Fred Langa's Langalist, he says
. eTrust isn't generally regarded as a top choice among AV tools,
. I respectfully disagree with him, but I would be interested in your opinions. Thanks.

I would also be interested in different opinions of eTrust as today I installed version 6.4.0.4 free for 1 year. As I read through this thread it appears the new version 7.0 is causing all sorts of problems. This sounds like the same problems people are having with the new free version of AVG 7.0. AVG 6.0 worked great for most people and now AVG 7.0 is causing all kinds of problems. That is the reason I stopped using AVG 7.0 and selected eTrust.

This thread was originally started by me because of problems I was having upgrading ETrust and my wife's machine. Efforts to resolve with ETrust were fruitless. Accordingly, I have terminated a two year relationship with them and plan to keep it that way. I have downloaded and installed AVG's free version 7. And contrary to the experience of some others -- so far -- have had no problems. In fact, I have AVG 7 free installed on two machines, both working fine ... and one running Mailwasher Pro, without any problems. As you have heard it said: One man's food is another man's poison. AVG 7 has been food for me, ETrust poison.

This is not an 'update', rather more of a 'down-date' -I suppose everyone got the email regarding discontinuation of support:

Gist of it:

Therefore, effective May 17, 2005, we will be discontinuing support for:

eTrust™ EZ Antivirus version 5.3
eTrust™ EZ Antivirus version 5.4
eTrust™ EZ Antivirus version 6.0
eTrust™ EZ Antivirus version 6.1
CA's eTrust™ EZ Security Team announced the general availability of eTrust™ EZ Antivirus r7 this month (November 2004). This new version includes numerous enhancements, including an improved user interface, a secure file quarantine, an advanced help system and comprehensive alerts. Additional information can be found here.

Hang on to v6.3 .

Hopefully good things will come from this ... delay  ...

I really don't want to get this thread started again but---

When I try to update I get a box titled "Autodownload Error".

The message is "550 No Such Directory".

My question is - Is it May 17th, 2005 already? ;-)

I'm wondering if they've stopped updating or perhaps they have some other problem.

Who knows?
