Hi there,

Ive been posting recently on these forums due to my computer being very temperamental and crashing quite a lot during games playing and just listening to music or whatever. After a while I realised the problem wasnt getting any better even with u guys great help it occured too much for me to stand so I formatted my computer.

Everything went fine except that when I bought the computer, it would not run warcraft 3, it did the same thing it is currently doing. When I load warcraft it goes into the movie cutscene then when i click to skip that it goes to a black screen where nothing happens. I can move the mouse and occasionally it will let me CTRL-ALT-DEL back to desktop and puts me in 640x480 resolution. Otherwise I just have to press the reset button.

Like I said this problem occurred when I first bought this PC so I took it back to the shop and they fixed the problem, telling me all they did was run some critical updates and the game worked fine after.

Well I have formatted my computer again and installed every windows update I can find and updated all my sound/gfx drivers and updated direct x. There is a thread on this at Blizzard Support but I have taken every step they suggest there and its been no help.

My computer specs are:

AMD Duron 1.1gig
256MB DDR RAM
20GB Hard drive
19" iiyama monitor
Geforce 2 MX 64mb

I will repost the log from direct x below.

Thanks in advance

EDIT -- The following are things I have done on advice from others and from the Blizzard support article on my problem:

Updated to latest VIA 4in1 drivers
Updated to latest Avance AC'97 Audio drivers
Updated to latest Geforce Detonator drivers
Updated DirectX to version 9.0b
Downloaded and run soundmax.reg and war3.reg from Blizzard site
Installed every Windows 98 critical update
Run the Warcraft3 Video test program on every resolution in OpenGL and DirectX mode and all worked perfectly
Set monitor refresh rate to 60hertz

EDIT 2 -- Ok I got sick of waiting around hehe went and bought windows xp pro hopefully this will fix the problem ill post again if it goes wrong :S

You should do the tests in DXDIAG to see if the problem lies within a piece of hardware. Usually (for me at least) it has been a graphic problem. (Direct Draw being one of them)

Display Tab 1: The file nvdisp.drv is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL). Current drivers tested for a WHQL logo are only available on Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. New Windows 98 drivers are no longer tested for WHQL logos
Again, possible driver conflict.

Installing Windows XP over 98 might illeviate the problem, though you should to a fresh install to make absolutley sure that it's clean from problems.

In fact you can run the setup to check for problems. In comand prompt on the CD drive, type setup.exe /checkupgradeonly. If you have the full version I don't know if the attribute will work. (It should also autorun and I believe there is an option to check the upgrade).

I am running Windows XP Professional now and my computer is still having problems. The problem that occured before was fixed by installing Windows XP and I did do a full HD format before installing Windows XP. Now though I have a worse problem where the computer will load the game, but now just crashes at totally random times. The screen will completely lock up and I cannot do anything except press the reset button on the case. Sometimes the computer just resets itself in the middle of something, which made me wonder if it could be a PSU problem.

I ran all the tests in DXDIAG and all of them worked except stage 3 of the direct draw tests (full screen bouncing white box) which didnt work:

No problems found.
DirectDraw test results: Failure at step 7 (User verification of fullscreen bouncing): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)
Direct3D test results: All tests were successful.

I am currently in the process of updating all my drivers again but this was the same problem I had when using my Windows 98 OS and I'm almsot certain it isnt a driver issue :(

Any more help would be greatly appreciated

I find that a lot of times when a program crashes -- especially a relatively new program like WC3 -- it's because of something else running on the computer, something that you might not even realize is running. On several occasions it turns out to be one of the many functions of Norton Antivirus.

(Several years ago when I played WarCraft 2, it would crash everytime something (like an incoming e-mail) would activate a system sound!)

Last month I was helping my wife's friend over the phone: She had a two-year-old Compaq that had never worked right: Constant freezing, especially during shutdown, and the techs at the store where she bought it could never quite figure it out. Now it wouldn't start at all, and it was out of extended warranty. I talked her through a few tests, got it started in Safe Mode, and finally nailed the culprit: Some kind of "Compaq EZ Access" [email protected] program that ran at startup. I had her disable that, and her computer is still running fine a month later.

Go to BlackViper.com and get a list of what should and should not be running on your computer, and see if you can find something that doesn't belong. Or, download a program like Startup Cop and try to minimize the startup junk.

Of course, this isn't always the problem, but it's a fairly easy thing to check out.

No Im afraid I dont have another gfx card, well I do but its a Voodoo 2 and not powerful enough to run Warcraft 3. If you're certain this is a faulty card I could buy a replacement but I would like to be 100% certain because I have already spent a lot of money on this computer trying to fix it when nothing has worked :(

Okay, well like I said, it can't hurt to look for conflicts like I described above, before you spend more money on more equipment. It doesn't cost anything.

I just thought of something. Is your motherboard come with an intergated video card? If so it could be conflicting with the card. It's known to happen. You might want to check the BIOS to make sure it's disabled.

When you start your machine, it says on the bottom "press to enter setup" usually is either F2 or DEL key. I think in the Advanced screen you should see a lising for VGA controller.

I couldnt see anything in the BIOS which looked like what you were talking about, and I'm pretty sure the motherboard doesnt have integrated gfx anyway. I did go to www.blackviper.com and altered all my services, which seems to have the computer running well for now, but one of the things I disabled has removed the blue/green windows xp colour scheme and taken me into a windows looking more like 98. Can anyone tell me what to re-enable to get it looking how it was before?

Ah, OK. Then click Start->Control Panel->System->Advanced->first settings button, and put a check in 'Adjust for best appearance'. That should enable all the visual stuff....then later, you can uncheck the individual stuff you don't want by selecting Custom.
