You have to have the exact one in most cases.

The ports etc are located at different places on different models, the cooling options are quite specific to the case and motherboard,

In short, they are usually matched units, motherboard and case.

And it would be just cheaper to get a new laptop, by the time you replaced the motherboard (from HP) and added a new CPU you would need to buy a new OS because the one you currently have is OEM and probably would be required to buy a new key.

Better and cheaper to replace unit. Adding external drives to an older and USB-limited notebook is not the way to go... what if all the USB ports fail?

Todays $550~600 (Get an AMD or Core notebook) come with 512mb, DVD-RW drive and usually a 60GB HD. This of course is a 15.4" screen model and most if not all include wireless networking. Don't buy a celeron system again...

Notebooks are not upgradable.

Er.... we just said you can't really replace the mobo/CPU - you're looking at about $200~400 for parts + labor to put it together - so perhaps about $600~800 you can fix it.. besides trying to locate such parts.

There is not much different in the brands... HPaq are pretty good for the price. Sonys are on the expensive side - Toshibas are kinda low-cost, but I REALLY can't stand their keyboards... Windows key is on TOP.
