 Due to operator error, I now have a black screen ( I inadvertadly deleted an Intel video driver, or something like that) and I can only open in safe mode. When I attempt to use a CD Rom recovery disc, the computer will not spin up the CD. The CD rom used to work perfectly. I have a 98Se Start up disc on a floppy. I am not very advanced in all this, so please bear with me.

Our first plan was to abandon this old beast and buy a new pc, which we ordered a day ago, but in the mean time, I'd like to at least spend a short time trying to restart the old machine. My wife says I am incredibly stubborn - I guess she hasn't met many Swedes in her lifetime.

Hi PP3 it would depend on how "vital" the dll files are.
No harm in doing scanreg /restore.
What dll files are you missing?
Can always use System file checker [not the best Windows application]
Start>run>type sfc..you will need your install Cd.
It will load old outdated dll files..but can D/load new ones once system is up and running.
