I'm trying to set up a VPN so my friends can join up to my LAN over the internet and play games with me. I am sitting behind a router (Dynalink RTA220), the router's firewall is enabled, and my windows XP firewall is currently disabled. I am using windows XP's inbuilt VPN capabiliities, and have opened all necessary ports in the router and the router's firewall as far as I can tell.
I have had a variety of users attempt to log onto my network, and although they appear as logged on (in my Network Connections Screen) I cannot communicate with them or see them on my network, and vice versa. I changed the TCP/IP settings of the VPN to force incoming users to use the same 192.168.1.x format of my network, but it still hasn't fixed the problem. To make matters worse, whenever a connection is made, both computers suffer instability, with messenger playing up on the clients end, and Explorer crashing on my end. All sorts of users have joined up to me, ADSL and dialup, but not those with routers - I'll worry about that contingency when I've got these problems sorted out, and everybody seems to suffer the same problems. I have stepped the client users through the win XP network connection wizard to set up the VPN client. I am really at a loss as to what is causing these problems, and would greatly appreciate the wisdom of someone who's been here before, to help me through it
thanx
