I have a laptop from college that isn't hooked up to the internet that I use for my kids at school to play games on. I was trying to install a program and it required me to install windows media player. Now my volume is gone. Under the settings, none of the mute buttons are checked and it still doesn't work.

Go to start, run, dxdiag, and then the sound tabs.

Thanks for giving me the info. When I did that it said:
direct sound test results: failure at step 19 (user verification software) RESULT-0x0000000(error code)
