I was told by a friend who works in the computer industry and he's telling me I should become an "expert" or get a good understanding of Windows Vista as in the future it will be the most used Operating System.

Does anyone agree with my friend? He works at a computer shop..

I'm personally not going to use Vista til' there's a service pack or it has less problems (from what I've heard it's a major problem). I'm sure Windows Vista works great but so does Windows XP Service Pack 2..

Because very shortly the vast majority of computers sold will come with Windows Vista it has the potential to become the most used OS. It will have to be very, very bad for it to fail. Personally I think it's pretty good and has every chance to be a great success. There are people I respect who have different opinions. We'll all know who's right a year from now.

not to mention all the apps that need to be have new drivers to be compatible with vista....I know of several that are scrambling, and some are pretty good sized names as well.

I know my company for one will be one of the last to transition to Vista. We still run Windows 2000 on most of the desktops and a few people have XP. But the damn Mac people always get their upgrades to the latest version of OS X. Plus we don't have a single PC in our company with more than 256mb of ram yet all the computers have P4 cpu's. They are so damn cheap when it comes to buying ****.

It depends, if you want to stay up-todate with tech and know all about the latest stuff then you are going to need to become familiar with Vista.

If you want to have a peacful computing experience wait a while.

I work on a Service Desk for a well know worldwide company and i know that we will not be jumping onto Vista quickly.

There's some factors to take into consideration:

* Cost
* Training of support people
* Compatability with other applications / systems

Those are just a few.

I admit i have been playing with Vista and, so far, i do like what i see although XP does the jobs for me fine.

If it ain't broke...!

I think the trend is going to continue as is, with a few adjustments now that Mac is Windows- friendly. But diehard Linux users will still use their Linux. People living in the past will still use 95/98 [yes, I know a few] and a few will stick to 2K, ME, or in the near future, XP, because of the price. But as Vista gets cheaper, more people will upgrade.
Nothing new or exciting, really.

If you want to get a feel for how it works, take a test drive of OS X.

I saw a headline today that referenced something like 300k machines with Vista will be sold in the first six months of this year.

Vista's out at the computer store near me. They are trying to make a big hype about it.

I am pretty hyped up about Vista, mainly for it's graphics and Aero Experience.

Other than that, I will have to see what else changes with it compared to XP.

I have the RC1 installed, but really haven't messed around with it too much but it definitely is the future.

Also... speaking of future I can't wait to see what Mac has in store...

yeah, pretty soon, it's going to be the OS for most programs to be compatible with, and nothing less than that or earlier, but that's not going to happen on Jan. 30, it'll happen somewhere down the road, and MS will still help you two versions from the current one anyways, I think I'll buy it because it looks neat but I can't say I'll be getting it anytime soon. I'll wait until the version comes with a service pack to work out the kinks in it
