Virus scan crashes laptop...so does trying to back up

Hello, I've been having weird problems with my laptop for a couple of weeks and it's been getting progressively worse. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Vista Home Premium. I will put the hijack this log in after I describe what's been going on.

Internet Explorer 7 started having problems first. When I tried to start it, it immediately gives me an error that it's stopped responding and closes. Then I open it again and it's fine. It was like this until a couple of days ago, I'd get the message, it's okay for a while then everything just freezes and the only way to "fix" it is to power off and restart.

I also started getting the following message when the home page starts to load:

I reset the setting today and it's been okay but I also did it about a week ago and the problems started up again.

When I try to do a manual scan from pc-cillin it freezes up and has to be powered off, I've tried atleast three times. I also tried to run Dell's diagnostics test and it also froze but I was able to shut it down with the task manager.

Dell told me I had to restore to laptop so I bought an external hard drive this morning to back up before I restore the system, a SimpleDrive by SimpleTech 500 GB. I attached it to the laptop, automatically installed the driver, but won't back up when I press the button. The software seemed to install okay, then it started to install software for the "button", pc-cillin stopped it, saying it detected a virus (Troj A). I tried to back up by going through the control panel, it started to work, but after about 30 minutes it froze and I had to power it off.

Btw, right now I'm trying to back up to Dell DataSafe Online, I don't know how long it should take but it's been going for about an hour, says it has another hour to go and I'm only backing up about 2GB (the limit is 3GB), I wasn't sure if that was right.
