Just got my new PC for graduate school and its awful fast but i believe i have a virus already lol. Im not too sure how i got it alot of my roomates use my computer so im assuming its due to a website. I had not yet installed a virus program and when i got onto my computer i noticed popup windows kept comming up. I also could not right click on the desktop. On top of this, both the RUN option and the SEARCH option under the start bar are gone. Also i cannot access the task manager with control+alt+delete. I get a message that says task manager has been disabled by your administrator. it also will not let me right click on the start bar when it pops up. an error message pops up saying this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions put into effect on this computer. Obvioulsy i was freaked out so i purchased Norton 2007 and spyware doctor software. Norton told me i was infected with a file called trojan.adclicker and that it could only remove 2 of the 4 files. When i ran spyware doctor it told me i had backdoor.bifrose and cookie problems and internet explorer user restrictions. it claims it fixed everything but im still missing SEARCH and RUN. I cannot open the task manager and i cant right click on the desktop...im hoping i dont need to wipe out my hard drive :confused: it would be great if i could get some assistance

after running a bunch of spyware removal tools (adaware SE, spybot search and destroy, spyware doctor, and norton 07) everything is back to normal except the search bar under start is still disabled and right clicking on the desktop is still disabled. the Run command has reappeared on the start menu and i can now go into the task manager without it saying it is disabled. How can i return the search feature and the right click feature that are being disabled by hidden spyware

  • Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click " Configure Scan Options"
  • Select " Run Add ONs" and then select ALL the options in the box below it, Press Apply
  • Now Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
    • Reboot back to Normal Mode!
    • Go to the WinPFind folder
    • Locate WinPFind.txt
    • Place those results in the next post!. It will be too big to post so you will need to attach it to your reply

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

now Start killbox, paste the first file listed below into the full pathname and file to delete box

The file name will appear in the window, select delete on reboot , press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and NOto reboot now then repeat for each file in turn

[Note: Killbox makes backups of all deleted files & folders in a folder called C:\!killbox ] If Killbox tells you any files are missing don't worry but make a note and let us know in your next reply

Then on killbox top bar press tools/delete temp files, in the pop up box towards the middle is a drop down box containing a list of all user accounts on this drop down user account box, select your account, select ALL options it will allow you to, then then press delete selected temp files , then repeat for every user account listed in that drop down box

then reboot &

This fix is only for XP & Windows 2000

Download and Save Cleandesktop to your computer from this link: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/cleandesktop.exe and double click on the cleandesktop.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\desktopclean where it needs to be to run and will automatically run the cleandesktop.vbs script

If it doesn't open then go to c:\desktopclean and double click on the cleandesktop.vbs Do not run any other file from there please unless asked to

If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run. It is not malicious.

If you get a message when you first run it "Can not find script file "blah blah blah" then don't worry just doubleclick the cleandesktop.vbs script again you sometimes get that message when a script blocker blocks the script

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your normal desktop and context menu functions.

It will restart Explorer.

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

I have included another vbs to do this. It is named Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Have each User sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs
Open C:\ (Go to Start>Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the c:\desktopclean folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

To restore the desktop to whatever picture you normally have right click on a blank part of desktop & select properties/desktop & select your prefered picture press apply & then ok to exit and then press F5

You will need to do this step for every user account

everything works up to the point of the desktop clean...no matter if i click on it or goto C:\ desktop clean.vbs the prompt quickly opens for just a second and then nothing happens

I wonder if spyware terminator or pctools spyware doctor has script blocking enabled

lets see if this shows what might be wrong

download & run http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent Runners.vbs

save it to desktop & run it from there (double click on it to run) follow all it's prompts and it will make a file called startup programs , copy the contents of that list back here

it still only appears as a notepad document i dont know what im supposed to do with it even when its on my comp i open it and its a mile long of random letters lol

weird thing is DVK when i go into safe mode i can see a new administrator account but i should be the only admin...i guess thats the hijack virus or whatever and i tried creating a new admin account and deletin my old account but no dice. the weird thing is the new account i created has no virus problems or restrictions..are you sure theres nothin else i can do to try and fix this?
