Hi,

Yesterday, while surfing the net I encountered some problems where my browser just shut down. Today, on starting the PC, this error msg comes up:

AVGCC32 caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:012613d0

another time it also said

AVGCC32 caused an invalid page fault in module AVGRES.dll at 0167:100013d0

AVG then closes down. I try using other programs and I get page fault errors in those too, including IE (running IE6).

I searched for any files created that were created at the time the problems occured. I found some strange files:

sherlok1.exe
sherlok2.exe
secure.html
svchost.exe
inites.ini
wmsr032.dll
loadnew.exe
reg32.exe

These were all created at the same time and about the time the problems started. I've deleted, but they're still in my recycle bin if I need to reinstate them.

Anyone know how I can sort this problem out? I can only sometimes open an IE browser !

Appreciate any help.

Alex

Hi byepeeps

Welcome to TSG! :)

Please do this. Click here to download Hijack This. Un Zip it and click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

*Note: When you download Hijack This Do Not download it or UnZip it to a temp folder or to the desktop. Create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This and put it in that folder.

Click here to download CWShredder. UnZip the file, close all browser windows and click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished Restart your computer.

To help prevent this from happening again, I strongly recommend you install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits.

The simplest way to make sure you have all the security patches is to go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs"

Go here and download Adaware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest referencefiles.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Restart your computer.

Then go here and download Spybot Search & Destroy.

Install the program and launch it.

Before scanning press Online and Search for Updates .

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click Check for Problems and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds marked in RED.

Restart your computer.

Go here and do an online virus scan:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself.

Come back here and post another Hijack This log and we'll get rid of what's left.

Restart your computer.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling AVG to fix that error.

Thanks,

I've done that and I'm still getting a lot of problems. I've already uninstalled/reinstalled AVG and still get the error:

AVGCC32 caused an invalid page fault in module AVGRES.dll at 0167:100013d0

At the moment I've left it uninstalled.

I can't use yahoo messenger and outlook express ( MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:10001290. ).

On loading IE I get a box saying "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience." Most of the time I'm unable then to open IE at all but sometimes it works.

Any ideas what I should do?

Start Windows in MS-DOS mode (press the Ctrl key as soon as your PC starts. This will get you the Bootup menu. Once the menu is up, choose Command prompt only)
Type scanreg /restore at the prompt
You will get a screen where you can select which registry backup to use
Choose one of the listed backups and press Restore
When ready you'll be prompted to Restart your computer

Thanks, i did this and the problem went away. However, now everything is out of date and a lot of my programmes now can't find their drivers. Is there anything I can do to make them find the drivers again?

Thanks a lot. I'm in the process of uninstalling/reinstalling some bits of software. How do I back up my registry so that I have a more recent version once I am back to tip top condition?

Many thanks for your help.
