I'm helping my brother with his machine.

His fiance downloaded some "anti virus" app that installed malware (don't worry -- they just broke up) which is telling us "Your computer is in Danger! Window Security Center has detected spyware/adware..." etc. Additionally, various windows are popping up (replete with misspellings) instructing the user to download anti-spyware apps (with sheild logos and everything!).

I had great success with this site about 6 months ago and I'm hoping you can assist me again!

Search the web for that spyware/adware--or should I say anti-virus app--for advice on how to untangle from it.

My suggestion is to save a lot of time by formatting the disk and doing a clean install of Windows.

I have killed Windows Messenger, but the balloon instructing me to "Your computer is in Danger! Window Security Center has detected spyware/adware... click here to install the latest protection tools" persists.

Well I can Identify one culprit:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System] C:\WINDOWS\System32\testtestt.exe

Testtestt.exe is a varient of the trojan testtest.exe.

"testtest.exe is a Trojan.PPdoor-Q.
testtest.exe opens a back door.
testtest.exe tries to terminate antiviral programs installed on a user computer."

You are definately infected but should either google how to remove the program (possible multiple infections) or wait for an admin or someone with more knowledge of hijack this to help you. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Go to the link below and download the trial version of SpySweeper:

SpySweeper http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeper/index.html?acode=af1&rc=4129&ac=tsg

* Click the Free Trial link under "SpySweeper" to download the program.
* Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
* It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
* Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
* Click the Sweep Options tab.
* Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
o Sweep Memory
o Sweep Registry
o Sweep Cookies
o Sweep All User Accounts
o Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
o Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
o Sweep for Rootkits

o Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.

* Click Sweep Now on the left side.
* Click the Start button.
* When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
* Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
* It will remove all of the items found.
* Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
* Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
* Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
Also post a new Hijack This log.

I'm at work now and away from my brother's PC. I'll work on this tonight.
You should know that since my last post I ran Prevx per this link: http://www.greatis.com/appdata/d/t/testtestt.exe_Removal.htm
It detected and quarantined testtestt.exe along with some other apps. I then deleted those files.
The only remaining symptoms are:
1. a "missing dll" message upon starting Windows (don't recall the exact dll -- sorry!)
2. inability of user to access Task Manager "disabled by administrator".
I logged-in in Safe Mode as Administrator and attempted to adjust the Default User's rights, but couldn't see anything that controlled access to Task Manager.

I have killed Windows Messanger and I enabled Task Manager using the first method on the list. Worked perfectly.
I downloaded SpySweeper and left your instructions for my brother. He was going to run it and give me the resultant HiJackThis log. I'll post it once he does.

sorry for the lack of Posts. My brother's ex fiance had the phone and Internet in her name and turned off his service so he's getting this reestablished before we can fix it.
I'd bring it over to my home, but I'm affraid of getting his machine on my network.
