HEP ME HEP ME HEP ME !

Here is what's gone down. My OE6 Email seemed to be acting up so to make sure it wasn't my computer I did a shut down.

When the computer restarted it suddenly said," Loading personalized settings" (it might have said installing settings - I can't remember!) Well I hadn't changed anything for that user so I asked it to shutdown and it did.

After the restart the desktop, my docs, quicklaunch, and personalized stuff is all wrong. A peek at MY USER info in C:\WINDOW\PROFILES\MY USER is fine. My desktop,my docs, quicklaunch and all are right there! There are no new user profile folders added.... just the two that were there.

I created a test file and planted it around to locate things. MY USER is using C:\desktop and C:\my docs instead of the user files located in C:\WINDOW\PROFILES\MY USER . The QUICKLAUNCH BAR is the one listed in the user profile but it is wrong and has been replaced with one that dates back to 2002 - Where did it find that?

I did a registry restore from yesterday - but to no avail. What gives? OE6 folders seem intact but I now have only one account

WORD and EXCEL won't run because of that stupid
"The Managed Software Installer failed to install the program associated with this file" garbage. I've seen that before on another computer and will ask that question in another post

So what has happened to them? I could go back another registry date but yesterday's should have been fine.

So HEP ME!

Sorry  shoulda said I was using W98

While I was away, I played around. I created a new user and chocked his folders full of stuff but alas.... the PC still slams up the Windows desktop and the Windows my docs and stuff.

No luck getting WORD or EXCEL to run. But try to run it and it gives me a "This application must be installed to run. Please run setup from the location where you originally installed the application!" Yet if I go to the folder and check, it is resident there and the file shows exactly the same size as my ghost copy.

W98 has gone cross-eyed or something! I hope I can get it's vision back. I find it strange that it has re-established shortcuts that have been deleted for years. I mean when you send a shortcut to the recycle bin it shouldn't be anywhere but there.

What about "repairing" it like IE? Is there such an option?

Suggestions guys

CH,

Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions to fix your
current problem, however, AFTER you do get it fixed,
check out this link. I think you'll like what you see.

http://www.helpscreen.com.au/index.php?cid=5&msgid=884833521

Pricewatch.com has Norton Systemworks Professional 2003
(it includes Ghost 2003, Antivirus 2003, Utilities 2003 and
CleanSweep 2003) for $9.00 BUT, WATCH THE TAX/SHIPPING!!

ALSO: If your computer is one massive C Drive, you are
asking for trouble. Get yourself Partition Magic to keep your
C Drive seperate from your data files. I Just found it on Pricewatch.com
for $46.00 delivered and CompUSA for $50.00

Good Luck.

Ben
