about 2 years ago I was using dsl modem plugged into my usb port well i was fortunate that all i lost was my power supply. That is until last year I was having my wireless roadrunner installed and tech guy said i had to use an ethernet card and plug directly into modem because my usb ports were not working. I never used the usb ports other then for my modem so I hd no idea there was a problem with them. I figured it was a conflict with their product, then my husband bought me a digital camera and it will not work on my usb ports works fine on everyone elses. my hardware file shows usb as working with no conflicts but when ever you plug anything in its not recognized my camera does recognize the pc though. My stats are below if anyone has any ideas ( i am assuming somthing got fried thats why I have not messed with it but i really need to use my cam on my pc not the kids.)

They could indeed be damaged, you can try booting to Safe Mode, and remove them from Device Manager, and reboot and see if it will work then...

Or you could buy a PCI USB card like these...

I was considering buying the pci but my camera says must be internal usb not add on not sure what they mean but do you think it would still work? I think thats the easiest as I have tried what you suggested.

They might mean that it won't through a hub...

Another possibility,
How many drives are in your machine.? Win98 has a problem seeing drives beyond E
Go to start, run and type sysedit
Open your config.sys file
Add the line "lastdrive=z" without quotes.
This will allow windows to see drives beyond letter E

What should I do if my PC still won't recognize the camera after I reinstalled the USB drivers?

Answer
If the camera is still not recognized after the USB driver has been re-installed, one of the following situations may apply.

"PC Camera" may be selected as the USB setting on the digital camera. Change the USB setting to DSC or select DSC in USB MODE. (This only applies to models with a USB Setting or USB MODE option in the SETUP screen.)

Does the LCD monitor on the digital camera show that the USB connection is active (USB, DSC or a USB symbol with an arrow, etc.)? If not, the digital camera and PC may not be connected correctly. Check the items listed below.

a) Restart the PC and reconnect the USB cable.
b) If the PC has multiple USB ports, connect the cable to a different USB port.

If steps a) and b) have both been tried and there is still no USB connection indicator displayed on the LCD monitor, there may be a problem with the digital camera or USB cable. Contact an authorized Fujifilm service center and ask them to check the digital camera together with the USB cable. Refer to the Digital Equipment Repair page for information such as the procedure for requesting checks and the locations of authorized Fujifilm service outlets.

The USB driver may not be installed correctly. Download the USB driver from the Digital Camera Downloads page and re-install the driver

The camera may not be recognized correctly if it is connected to an added USB interface board or via a USB hub. Always connect the camera directly to the USB port on the PC.

Other than that, the only thing I can say is try the USB card and see...

Many camera's will not work with an external USB hub, they require a root hub.

My understanding is that an internal PCI USB card will behave like a root hub and should work.

Ok I tried updating the drivers still same problem the camera says usb as soon as i plug it in but pc still not reading the cam . When i try to edit my config.sys it will not let me at all it says "This file was created by the System Configuration Utility as
rem a placeholder for your CONFIG.SYS. Your actual CONFIG.SYS
rem file has been saved under the name CONFIG.TSH."

Go to start, run, find files or folders and search for CONFIG.TSH and try editing that with the lastdrive=z.

Thanks rugrat but that did not work either, I'll make a trip to best buy or circut city later this week and try a pci card wish me luck and thanks e1 for your suggestions.

Sure...No Problem...

IMHO...Just make sure you uninstall everything associated with the camera first...

Install the USB card ( and any drivers it comes with ), then install the USB Drivers for the camera, connect the camera, make sure that W98 see's it, then install the other software for the camera...

1 more quick question do i need to disable the usb ports that are already on my pc and if i do how do i do that. (before installing the new card)

Yes...I would, but I would uninstall them in Device Manager first, then disable them via the BIOS...

Depending on the BIOS, during power up start tapping the Del, F1,F2, or F10 key, then disable the onboard USB...

Or depending on the motherboard it will be a jumper setting...

Ok I have decided if the pci usb card does not read my camera it should read a card reader right? So if it does not work through the new card I will try that next anyone know of a good card reader for xd cards?
