Hey all...my first post, so be gentle w/me! ;)
I need to transfer a bunch of files etc from an old Gateway 200Mhz Pentium running Win98SE to my new Xp-Home PC, so I thought I'd get a 1G Memorex TravelDrive 2.0 to play around with.
Memorex says it's 'backward compatible' with the (no doubt) 1.1 ports on my machine...and supported with a 1.4meg driver for SE which I DL'ed, if that means anything.
It works fine on the XP system, but when I plug it into the Gateway after driver install/re-boot, it is not recognized in My Computer.
No lights, no Icon etc.
The driver seems to have installed OK, there is an 'Intel8237 PCI to USB Host' and a 'USB Root Hub' listed in System/Device Manager, both working OK according to SE, and I just flashed the latest BIOS from Gateway (released ca 1999:cool: )
I've never connected anything to those USB ports ever, so I don't even know if they are alive....but is this do-able?
Any insight will be greatly appreciated.....

Thanx Guys for the quick help. I've seen both of those links before in my bleary-eyed research on this.
So what I think I'm reading is I need a driver for 98SE detect the drive, and the Memorex driver (already DL'ed/installed) to operate it??
Which one do I use???
The one from usb-drivers.com has 59 drivers for Win98...
I think I'll try the nusb32...I'll report back what happens....

Well..no luck with Nusb2.4
It dl'ed/installed fine after I un-installed the Memorex driver, but after re-boot my old Gateway still does not recognize my flash drive...even after re-installing the Memorex driver.

BTW..I ran the Intel USB checker 'USBready.exe' from
www.usbman.com and it said I had 'Full USB support' w/ 'No recomendations for hardware/software changes' so I'm stumped....(easy to do.... )

I guess I can buy a USB2 card to install in a PCI slot, yes??

Again..any insights would be greatly appreciated....

"Full USB Support" doesn't mean you have the driver for your particular USB mass storage device.

Thanx, bbear....that's the MaxDecim driver I downloaded from
here...http://www.mdgx.com/
Didn't solve my problem...:(

John W....I'm aware of that point.
I thought I was getting the proper driver when I downloaded /installed the Memorex driver as specified in the manual. They say for 'Win98SE..you need to install a USB2.0 driver for the computer to recognize the TravelDrive.' They provide it here...http://memorex.com/html/products_detail.php?section=3&CID=12&SID=16&PID=994&FID=150&opento=12#

Doesn't seem to work tho  ....or I need something else for 98SE, or I have 2 broken USB connectors etc etc.......
I've printed off a bunch of stuff from the usbman.com site to check....also investigating driverguide.com from guitar's link above....

Did you try my suggestion???
Not yet Dave...my Italian is not so good.
I'll try when I get home today.
FWIW....I doubt any of these drivers will work if the Memorex one does not, but I'll try anything at this point. I must have some other problem....
I'm going to re-search the Gateway site for an updated-updated bios, and try the Intel82371 PCI-USB host update on www.DriverGuide.com
....now that I'm a fully fledged, non-paying member there....

Thanx for all the input......
