I noticed that after isntalling my new hdd on a ide raid card so that i can fit one more hdd into my computer, that whenever i transfer a file from one hdd to another, my sound gets all distortted. I think that there is a irq conflict, so i checked, and load and behold io see that it is sharing the same irq number as my sound card. But then i changed the pci slot for the card and it still give me that crackly sound when i play music while transferring files onto the new drive.

Im using the Rosewill RC-200

already changed irq, and yes im runnign a sound blaster audigy se.

Certain chipsets exhibit PCI bus latency issues, which manifest themselves as static in the sound output. FWIW, it's not the shared IRQ that's the issue, since that's not used to actually generate the sound. It's the PCI bus data transfer being held up longer than the small buffers on the sound card can cover. i tried the pci setting and kept changing all the values with pci latency tool and evne used my bios to force certain pci latency and i still get the crackling problem.

Well, I replaced the MB of the system that I had the problem on, never could get the old one to work properly. I tried several sound cards, and screwing around with the PCI latency, no joy.

I'm just telling you how I solved this issue, since I couldn't find a resolution at the time. As I recall, it was in that same time frame.

Do you guys think if i switch the connection up with my dvd burner with the extra hdd, then would i get problems with my dvd-burner and get worse quality dvd burns? Cuz if i dont then i think it s agood idea to switch.

I can't imagine why it would cause any additional issues, but I don't see this as a solution to the sound issue.

well it could be the solution since it only starts to crackle and pop if i transfer files to my new hdd. So if the card was used on the dvd-burner instead i wouldnt hear the crackle while trasnferring file to my new hdd since it will run off the dvd-burners ide port insteead of the card.

i have 4 hdd and 1 burner so as u can see my motherboard only ahas 4 ide connectors and i had to buy the ide card to get a 5th connector.

Despite it's relatively high bandwidth (when not compared to AGP or FSB) PCI is crap at maintaining high transfer rates without stifleing other cards in the system. I'd suggest getting the harddisk onto USB instead as that has far superior performance and queing, I'm also sure you can get "internal" USB harddisks that connect to a motherboards USB header. I don't know a lot about IDE-USB so you may only have external options but USB would solve the prob of attaching more than 4 IDE devices to a 4 IDE system.

I've had SCSI PCI cards, USB PCI cards and countless other high speed transfer cards and all have scuttled my system before.

Well, USB would be considerably slower, about 2:1, but you have a point about it solving the PCI bus latency issue.

USB 2.0 is what I was talking about. The best throughput you'll get from a USB 2.0 hard drive is around 20-22 mbyte/sec, and any half decent IDE hard disk will easily double that.

well i forgot to say that even if i download things onto the new hdd, it can sometimes distort my music.

Its not jsut the music player, its all sounds on my computer.
