From SP0. I don't want to go to SP2 at this time.

Compaq Desktop 4410
Celeron 1.3 GHZ
128 MB ram

No AV on the computer. I scanned for virues at Panda & Norton; repaired / removed all found. I remove all of the spyware.

Running upgrade from a CD.

The progress bar "finishing installation" has been at about 60% for 4 hrs. Task manager notes 2 instances of update.exe , 1 using 0% to 30+%
[ mostly in the 2% to 8% range ] cpu time, the other using 0%, constantly.

What do you think about terminating the 0% update.exe?

Thanks

Yes, I understand that safe mode provides advantages.

However, hind being 20/20 but foresight being less than 20/20, I was stuck.

I decided to "end task" on the update.exe that was consistently at 0%. That closed the GUI. I selected "end task" on the other.

I unplugged the PC because it became unresponsive.

I booted to safe mode. I selected, in add/remove programs to uninstall the Win XP SP1, but received a notice that about 100 programs might not run. So I used "system restore" to try to fix the issue.

I'll let you know in about an hr. It is now 943 pm EST.
