I have tried on 2 different computers to upgrade to 512 mb from 256. Both are capable of this, but will not recognize the additional memory.

My main computer will go through the functions, but when all is said and done, I still only get the 256 mb.

Someone awhile back told me that it is a microsoft problem, and even though the computers are capable of holding the 512, microsoft won't allow it. I don't know if this is true or not.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
midwest

Hi midwest! You are probably going to have to go into more detail before anyone can help you. Such as OS, type of Mobo etc..:)

If you are using W98/98SE, 512MB is too much and Windows won't work. If you're using WinME, then you need to update Windows to recognize that much. If you are using Win2000Pro or WinXP(HOME or Pro), the new memory may not be compatible with the old or may not be any good. As mobo suggested, try the new stick by itself.

Also if you are replacing a 256MB with a 512MB, the motherbaord may not be capable of supporting a single 512MB chip.

Also to see if its Windows or the computer causing the problem; check what the computer reports for memory at POST, ie. when the computer first starts it counts/tests the RAM.

Yeah you might need two sticks of 512, or add a stick of 256. Also, make sure it's in the right slot. Check your users manual for details ;)

You would only need two stick if its RAMBUS. I meant that maybe the motherboard supports a total of 512MB of RAM but you need to divide that total by the number of slots to get the maximum single module size. Ie. 512MB divided by 2 slots is 256MB max per slot. Also make sure you are using single or double sided modules, or ECC vs Non-ECC RAM.

The main question that I have, is the 512Mb recognized during bootup? Before windows loads. Windows doesnt control how much ram the compter will recognize. Bios and Hardware control that. In windows 98 the problem is that it is optimized to run at no more than 256 Mb ram. The more over that you install the greater tha possibility and severity of an unstable OS you will have.
