Upgrading CPU

358 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  crjdriver
Hello,

When I tried to upgrade to Windows 11, I was informed that my 4th gen i7 CPU did not meet the requirements. Therefore, I have purchased a 10th gen i7 CPU.

However, after some research, I have found that this might not fit my current motherboard - ASUSTek COMPUTER INC. B85M-G.

Is this correct?
If I buy another motherboard, would my RAM, Graphic card etc. slot into the new one?

Thank you.

That CPU will not work in that motherboard. It will only accept 4th gen processors.

When you are looking at new motherboards, check out the QVL (qualified vendor list) for processors and memory that have been tested by the manufacturer and certified to work in that specific board. It will be under the Support section on the manufacturer's website.

The ASUS B85M-G motherboard supports the use of 4th generation Intel processors, so you cannot install and use a 10th generation Intel processor in it.
It also supports the use of DDR3 RAM, so you cannot install and use newer technology DDR4 RAM in it.

It would help us better to give you advice and answer your questions if you provide more information about your computer, so please do the following in it:
Download and save the tsginfo.exe file.
After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.
Information about your computer will appear.
Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your responses.
I have found this: Gigabyte H410M H V3 mATX Motherboard. This should accommodate the 10th gen Intel CPU. As you said flavalle, I would need to upgrade to DDR4 RAM.

As this is another mATX motherboard, it should fit in the same case, correct?

Will my other components fit the new motherboard? I am unable to use the tsginfo.exe :(

I have a Samsung SSD 840 EVO drive. TSSTCorp CDDVDW, NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 and ASUS PCE-N15 card.

Thank you.

Is that optical drive SATA? If so, it should work fine.

What make/model is your power supply? Has it got a 24-pin power connector and an 8-pin 12V connector for the motherboard?

Don't bother with the Norton A/V that comes with the board. Just use the Windows supplied Defender.

The SSD and PCIe expansion cards should work.

BTW -- You will need to reinstall Windows. It will not activate on new hardware. Did you buy that OS yourself? Do you have the Product Key for it?

As long as it is a standard type case, yes. The board you had was a micro board so it should not be a problem.
If you have never built a system before, I would advise you to do some reading and watching videos about how to build a system. It is not difficult; more like a long series of simple steps.
