I was just about to transfer some of the last files on my old HP with WinMe and I took it out of the closet. hooked it up, fired it up and it booted no problems started ME, AVG asked for update so I did. Then it asked for restart so I said ok. Comp shut down then went to restart. got as far as the HP blue screen then just powered off...Now i push and push and hold the power button and nothing happens..any ideas.

I'm gonna start ripping into the case soon.

EDIT: I'm no expert but it seems to me the only causeing this would be the power supply? I have it out but obviously looking at it doesn't tell me anything. I also removed the Hard Drive. Can I plug it into my other Dell running Win2000 (Precision 330) so I can get my files off it or will that not work?

Might the older computer have been very dusty? I just fried and older power supply because there was too much dust in it. You'd really smell it though.

I don't know how comfortable this would be to you but it is what I'd do. I assume that your older hard drive is IDE. I would take it out of your old PC, change the jumpers to the Slave settings and hook it up to your new PCs motherboard. Fire up your new computer and have a look in My Computer. You should see the hard drive there. Open it up and transfer all the files you need to your new HDD. When your all done, shut down your PC disconnect the old hard drive and your done with it.

If this seems difficult you can purchase an external HDD enclosure for your old hard drive that will connect via USB. When your done moving those files you can format the old disk and continue using it as a backup disk or whatever else you might want to store on it.

Sorry, didnt notice the Dell running 2000, If thats the PC you want to send the files to then yes, just like I explained above.

I'm not sure whats up with the power supply I tried a few test and nothing seemed to work. Maybe it could be the actuall power on button. But if I can just hook the hard drive to either of my dells that would work for me.

would u say its ok to hook it up to the new E521 or is it too old and slow. should I just go plug it into the Precision 330?

Page 14 displays a diagram of your drive.

It appears that you need to remove the jumper to set it as a slave in a dual drive system.

This is not difficult to do if you take some time to get familiar with things. It would be smarter to do it with your older dell though, just to be on safe side.

If your older dell uses the same ribbon to connect to the motherboard, and I'm betting it does, you should have a second connector on the same ribbon as well as another power connector on that power line. Remove the jumper from your HDD to make it a slave and hook it up here. Fire up the PC and look for the second drive. Should be D: or E:.

I took the old Dell and hooked in the second drive as slave and it it showed up as HP_PAVILLION (G:) which is what it was in the HP. I found everything I was looking for.

Thank you for your help.

I've noticed this drive was in Fat32 File system format. It came out of an old HP with AMD running windowsME. I think I'm gonna format it to NTSF and use it in the Dell.
