Hello Ozcamman and welcome to TSG. I wouldn't know how to help you, but someone will , just be patient. Seems like something is trying to load .I suspect you will be told to download a program named Hijack This, what sort of software are you running? The more info you give the quicker the computer gods, sorry I mean experts, the quicker they can will be able to help you ,and they will. :).
.ps where are you , in QLD in Oz by chance?

Download Spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Click on "Search For updates" when prompted.

Scan, click on fix problems.

Reboot.

Download AdAware SE Personal: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Install the program and launch it.

On the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

In the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Reboot and post another log.

Thanks for your advice..
Have run both adaware and spybot and re-booted as suggested.
The hourglass still flashes, but not all the time..My computer acts as the gateway for 2 other pc's that share the internet connection. Im not sure, but I have a feeling that the flashing cursor may be related to one of these networked pc's.
When I stated this thread there was no hourglass activity, but now at the end its back again...
A mystery eh...

Here is the latest hijackthis log...

Thanks for your input

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O23 - Service: MySQL - Unknown - C:\Program.exe (file missing)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

This folder: C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\~e5d141.tmp needs to be emptied.

I don't know what that is running but it shouldn't be! Restart in safe mode and delete everything in that temp folder.

I suggest you get all of the critical updates from Microsoft.

Thanks again for your input....
Ran hijackthis and fix this file
O23 - Service: MySQL - Unknown - C:\Program.exe (file missing)
However this file or folder I cannot find
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\~e5d141.tmp
Search the hard drive completely

Also could you clarify what you mean by get rid of all microsoft critical updates.
Do you mean uninstall them.. what is the process?

Thanks again

No don't get rid of the critical updates, get the critical updates!

That folder is hidden so do this:
Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now you should be able to find the folder.

Hmmm... well the hourglass still flashes. I think I have narrowed it down to an svchost.exe process run as a local service. The memory usage for this particular process keeps slowly increasing, until it reaches a point where the hourglass begins to flash.. I can end this process seemingly without any adverse effects, however the process just starts-up again..
Got me baffled...
