Anyway, I include these two files in the fix.

Try this again:

Click on the Start button and then click on the All apps button. You should see there the McAfee Personal Security. What happens if you right click and select Uninstall?

When I do that it pulls a different list, but McAfee Personal Security does not show up. Nothing from McAfee shows up in that list. And I apologize. I did not see this post and so I ran the FRST as instructed with the Fix. Should I go ahead and put that log here, or are am I still trying to figure out where this Personal Security McAfee is? It's not showing up in all apps the new way, either.

Maybe I did remove the McAfee personal security? But I don't know. I hope so?

So, since I ran the fix list, I'll go ahead and attach it here. Please let me know if I need to do something else about the McAfee stuff and then run it again.

Thank you again for your help. I'll probably be able to be on more during your time tomorrow since I'm off work. I really appreciate all your help and hope you have a wonderful evening/morning/day until then! :)

Thanks.

Please run FRST tool once more and provide the 2 logs: Addition and FRST.
  • Double-click on the FRST icon to run it, as you did before. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button and wait for a while.
  • The scanner will produced two logs on your Desktop: FRST.txt and Addition.txt.
  • Please attach these two logs in your next reply.

Thank you so much (sorry for the delay---on a quick work break now). I've attached the two requested files from the last scan, which I did as instructed above. :)

Again, many thanks for your patience in walking me through this process. I really do need to take some classes to get more educated and empowered with computers. I appreciate all your help, sincerely.

Also, is it okay to delete the older logs? I'm getting a lot of them on my desktop and I'm hoping I'm sending the correct ones. 🙃

Please accept my apologies about the delay. I will be able to see your logs by Monday. Meanwhile, no need to zip your logs. Do that only if you get an error. If you leave the logs (not zipped) as they are, the old ones will be replaced by the newer. At the end of the procedure, we are going to remove anything not needed. For now, you can delete the old zip files.

No worries on the delay! I totally understand. Thank you for the additional information. Would you like me to attach the nonzipped files now? I can do that if it will make it easier. Also, I should wait until we finish all this to reinstall McAfee, right? I am holding off, but I am a bit worried about not having an AVP on the computer currently. I'm not doing a lot online, and certainly no financial stuff until it's back on, but just wanted to check in case I could go ahead and do that.

No, it's OK for now to leave them as zip. From now on, you can post the txt files and zip them only if an error appears.

Do not worry about not having an antivirus installed. In fact, Windows 8 and above have a built-in antivirus -Microsoft Defender- which protects your system. It disables its self when a 3rd party antivirus is activated, but it gets enabled when it is the only security program running. From a quick look into your Addition log, the Defender seems to be disabled and Malwarebytes enabled.

Do this to fix it:
  • Open Malwarebytes.
  • Click the little gear on the top right (Settings) and when it opens, click the Security tab and make sure about the following:
    Code:
Under the title Scan Options, all the options are checked.
Under the title Windows Security Center (Premium only) the option is NOT checked.
Under the title Potentially unwanted items all options are set to Always.

Thank you, Dr. M. I did not realize Windows 11 (or even 8 and above) included antivirus protection. I followed your instructions above and unchecked the "Windows Security Center" (which was checked for some reason). The rest of it was okay. Does this mean the Windows antivirus will now work and I can pay my bills online without worry until I can reinstall McAfee? I really appreciate the info!

Also, having done some research, I think I'm going to cancel McAfee and use BitDefender in the future. It seems to be a better security program. If you have suggestions you know of that are better, I'm open to hearing those, too! I know I'm getting ahead of myself, though. :) It's good to know Windows offers some protection until then, though. You helped put my mind at ease, so thank you so much for that!

Yes. Normally it will enable its self now. You can read more about it and also check it so you can be sure:

Thank you so much! 😊 I shall go read it now! I will probably go with Bitdefender and cancel McAfee once we finish our stuff here, having done a little more research, but it's good to know there is some protection in the meantime. I will go read up on it now. I really appreciate all the help and education. I am learning a lot.

Oh, yes. Microsoft Defender is if I have the Office 365 subscription (which I do). I just thought I might buy BitDefender at some point to replace McAfee---if I decided to go again with a paid subscription service.

I'm not sure the Mircosoft is working, though. I followed the instructions and it said to click if there were red or yellow stuff, which there was. I am trying to restart the virus protection, but it keeps giving me this error:

so it looks like maybe it's not activated and/or isn't working properly? I clicked the restart, but then it eventually gives me this error and doesn't actually turn it back on. Sorry for being a problem again. :(

Also, these two McAfee key things are showing up as apps...they don't given an option to uninstall. And when I right clicked it automatically popped up asking if I wanted to allow the app to make changes (I said no as I don't want to reinstall this or anything else right now...I'm just trying to get my Microsoft Defender working until the rest of this is sorted out. But wanted you to see this in case it's something fishy---which it seems to be since I thought we had uninstalled all the McAfee stuff for now:

I seem to be in a never ending loop of trying to restart Windows Defender, and then being told they run into an unexpected error. I have restarted the computer multiple times in hopes that would help. I clicked repair and that did not help. I also click reset, which is also not helping. So I am definitely without any AVP right now and super worried about being on the internet at all. I definitely won't be doing any financial stuff or anything not absolutely necessary, but I do have to pay bills soon, so I need to have some sort of protection that works within the next few days.

I'm in tears at this point, having spent hours on this. Now I'm trying to follow online advice and update the windows defender updates and I get this message:

Azure Rectangle Font Screenshot Operating system

Is it possible some sort of malware or virus is causing all these problems? Or do I have to get a new computer (which I can't afford right now?)

Nothing I have tried has fixed the endless loop I am in. I ran the service and see that for some reason a bunch of McAfee stuff still appears to be running---but I thought this had all been uninstalled, so I have no idea where it is or why it is still running. Here is the information:

Product Rectangle Font Screenshot Operating system

I followed all the instructions for uninstalling it, so I have no idea why it is here. But I know one of the things that has come up with the troubleshooting for the endless loop on windows defender is having a third party virus protection installed and running. Clearly McAfee must still be running (or at least, if I'm reading this right?) but I have no idea from where since it was uninstalled. And I don't have an apps active with McAfee in the apps section either. I am going to have to have something to protect me before Monday because I need to do some stuff on the internet that will require me to NOT be out there without any protection. So if you are able to offer any help/solutions/suggestions before then I'd be eternally grateful. I have literally spent my entire day in Microsoft Help articles trying to trouble shoot this issue to no avail. I have restarted the computer numerous times, too.

Also, I broke down and called McAfee to try to reinstall it on the computer. Tech could not help. Everything that was on their official website I did, and then a tech person did with me over the phone. They said they could only fix it with remote access to my computer, which I'm too afraid to give them. So as of now, Windows Security is not running nor is my McAfee and I have zero protection. McAfee (from the official site) DID verify I have a valid subscription, purchased in June of last year. They said they don't give a unique code, but the code that is generated that changes is ONLY good for downloading to my computer (if we could have downloaded it.) They also verified, again, that I have a valid subscription, but I'm freaking out even being on the internet now since I have ZERO AVP right now. And i wonder if even posting that here is wise (it probably isn't), but I don't know what else to do to try to fix it and get back on track with where I should be. I'm sorry for all the long posts, and I'm sorry for trying to figure it out. I really wish I could just become a Luddite, but modern life does not make that possible. :(

I did a lot of googling trying to fix windows defender and I still can't. But just in case it's helpful, I did find out that the Microsoft Windows Defender in the Service menu should be set to "manual" not "automatic." I don't know if that is what is causing the problem. However, when I tried to follow the instructions to change it to manual, I don't have the ability to do it (it is greyed out and not an option). I was running it as administrator at the time, so I'm not sure why it won't let me. They gave some other fixes that seemed a lot more technical and involved entering codes and I don't want to do that before speaking with you. Here are the two screen shots I'm seeing in the service menu, in case they are helpful, showing that it is set to auto and how it won't let me change it to manual. The restart for virus protection is still doing what it did all day yesterday with the error code. Restarting the machine has not worked. I also have two security updates that won't install (I'm guessing due to the glitch with the Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which is now the only one on the computer, but clearly not working (is it even safe for me to be on the web right now? I'm very worried).

Thanks for any help. I'm just very concerned about being online at all right now without any sort of protection.
I appreciate your help.

I finally figured out the antivirus issue (I had to reset the computer to get the glitch out, but it worked. I kept all my documents and stuff, so hopefully it doesn't mess anything up here. Also, I'm so sorry for the multiple posts.
