Unable to restore Windows Image Backup

Hi..

My HDD died a couple of days ago and I received a new HDD from my laptop's manufacturer (Dell - Laptop 3568 Vostro). Fortunately I made a system image before the HDD failed (just after installing windows and drivers- the other backup i tried to make after HDD failure didn't work).

I tried using system rescue disk and the advance bootup option with image restore functionality but it seems none of the option is working as these utilities are not able to locate my system image that i stored on my external Western Digital HDD. I also tried to Google this problem but couldn't find any satisfactory answer.

As for system image backup i have a default folder named "Windows Image Backup" that windows created when i initially created the image. Had i missed something while creating the image backup?? Is this not the correct folder or the method to make system images?? Why windows is not able to detect the image?? Is there any third party software that i can use??

Almost anything would likely be better than a Windows embedded backup. I use Macrium Reflect Free. Other highly regarded tools by members here are Easeus Todo Backup Free and Acronis.

As I read the your post and its title , the problem is that the system image you created BEFORE the drive failed cannot now be restored to the new drive
If that is correct the 1000$ question is - what did you use to create the system image

The fact it is called

Windows Image Backup

in its short name, does not tell us what you used to make it

Although the recovery of the image is basically the same to some degree - whatever you used to make it, there are recommended methods if you used a third party program

I am not sure what you mean by system rescue disc

I know what one is, but there are many variants

In view of the fact I think you are asking how to restore the image you have made
either from windows 10 installed on the new drive and then recovery options, troubleshoot. advanced, system image recovery

OR from the install media if Windows is NOT installed on the new drive.
OR from a recovery drive

However as I said the 1000$ question is the one I need the answer to

I used the default windows inbuilt image backup utility to make the backup.

And I restored the image successfully today. Actually I should have moved the image backup to my WD HDD root directory. As the backup was in a folder the system was not able to locate it.

Yes you are correct, I followed your instructions and moved the file to the root directory of my external HDD.
