I am trying to make a dialup connection from a laptop running xp service pack 2 but cannot make a connection. I am in the UK and have tried various ISP settings but none work. The same settings on a second computer connected to same phone line do work.

When I attempt a connection it sounds although a telephone number with a lesser number of digits is being dialled and then I get the standard BT 'the number you have dialled is not recognised message'.

I have tried the obvious:
Checked the modem is installed and working.
Com port is enabled
Modem settings are okay
Number is correct.

But still no joy!!!

Does anyone have any other ideas!!!

Thanks

various isp settings, each is unique and you usually need a login/password to get in.

in control panel/modem what happens when you do the diagnostic check?

what com is being used for the modem?

in device manager is the right modem installed?

The modem diagnostic check records that AT#CLS=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED, but success for everything else.

The modem is attached to COM3 and the right modem is installed (checked in device manager).

All the other modem settings and dialling properties are the same as on another PC that works fine.

There is a broadband connection with Wanadoo installed (via USB) but broadband is not activated on the telephone line being used for the connection.

I have also tried installing a Tiscali dialup connection from a CD to see if it would change any non obvious settings.

What I do notice is that if the volume is turned up the number being dialled sounds although it is not as many digits as the one entered (correctly) in the connection properties. Is it possible that the computer could have been affected by a virus that could have installed a dialler that would not affect the broadband connection but stop a regular dialup one?

someone has added additional commands in modem properties.

in device manager remove the modem, boot the computer and the modem will reinstall, see if it works then.
