had a trojan that was "in the adaware vault" - couldnt figure out how to get rid of it - have windows xp - one day, pc turned itself off and now when i turn it on, it comes on for maybe 2 seconds and then shuts itself off. Should i try booting it from the winxp cd?

In a quarantine vault, it also should not affect system.

cant get the pc to turn on AT ALL - cant get it on long enough to boot in safe mode

What are the spec's of the computer and how old is it? Does the splash screen come up before it shuts off? If you can, try to boot from a floppy or CD. If the computer turns off when booted from an alternate OS then the problem is most likely hardware.
