Two Epox motherboards with Bulging capacitors

1511 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  brite750
Hello, I have 2 systems with epox ep-8k5a3+ motherboard in them that have Bulging capacitors and are out of warranty. Epox have quoted me 22.99 for each board to be repaired should i have to pay this since its there fault the capacitors are defective not mines? There's only 3 i can see that are bulging so i can't see where the have got £22.99 from. I have had a looking for new socket A motherboards since i just recently upgraded them from xp 1600's to xp 2800's. I paid over 100 pounds for these boards so why should i have to pay for them to be repaired or to get new ones.

Thankyou

Not sure what your warentee looks like but if they are past the warentee period your probably stuck, manufacturers have to limit their liability to some set amount of time, I mean defective componets worked for the warentee period so if Epox wants to play hardball, then either take them to small claims, or just dont ever buy Epox again, I sure wont after this post. if it was me i would write if off to experience and get new mobos from a more trustworthy company, I must admit i'm surprised that they wont RMA the boards since they had faulty caps, what did the boards have a 1year a month what?
Hi, I thought it was for 1 year but reading there rma page they say EPoX motherboard products are warranted for a period of 36 months, from the date of purchase and invoice from EPoX. The 36 month period only applies on boards purchased from 1st January 2004. Boards purchased before 2004 are covered by the original 24 months period.

So my warranty would be 24 months.

Anybody have good advice on what to put back in my next email to get them to do it free of charge. I will be getting very angry in my next email since its there problem. If it was something else i would be happy to pay them but it a well know problem with the caps.

thankyou

If you are handy you could do it yourself. I am not that good with an iron so I wouldn't try it.

It also looks like $22 is about the best you can do. I'd pick up a couple of Asus Nforce 2 boards and write it off to experience.

Here is the site with cap kits.

Part of the reason for the high cost is that they will have to replace all of the capacitors on the board, not just the ones that have swollen, as any they don't replace will probably start swelling after you get it back. I've seen this problem on more boards than I can count, it affects every manufacturer, not just Epox--I've seen MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, ECS, Abit, IBM, HP boards fail in the same way. Epox themselves aren't to blame, it's the manufacturers of the capacitors.

Yep, it was a stolen electrolite formula that was used in the caps. The thief didn't get the complete formula and everybody got hit. Still, most other Mfgs are covering the bad caps. Abit is for sure.
Ahhhhh, I just saw 24 month warranty. You are screwed. The Abit had a 3 year and they fixed it for me. Too bad for you.:(
Hi, I was thinking of repairing them my self. Im not too bad at soldering but never soldered on a pcb. Have read the guide on badcaps but i think i will pass. I did read abit were covering up on this. I will have a look at asus boards.

thankyou

I think they should repair them for free since they used defective components and sue the cap makers for compensation.

I might just get 2 new boards. What are good motherboards. I looked for a asus nforce2 at nearly £60 but i saw a via kt600 £35.19. The asus does not have raid well i don't use raid but it handy have a 4 port raid leaves ide for optical drives.

thankyou

If you can get them to except this, then that is your arguement, it is not your fault if they bought faulty components to build their boards, they should replace them in good faith, and I can tell you I will not buy their products after hearing this, #1 24 months is a pathetic warentee, that is not showing much trust in their product, so why should I? The good news is that there are still a lot of good Socket A mobos out there, i would obviously go with Asus, or Gigabyte
Hello, Are aopen boards any good? Since my friend stocks them and hes had no trouble with them.

Hello, Got an email back from them saying Only those capacitors that perform outside of 10% of the pre-endurance envelope are replaced. Can anyone convert that to english?? I sort of understand but could someone explain what there saying. There only going to give me 3 months warranty on the work carried out.

Thankyou
