Can anyone tell me why a computer running Win 2000 might constantly restart itself as soon as the login screen appears?

Also, how would I trouble-shoot something like this?

Thanks for any help!

Well...

If you can logon via Safe Mode, check the Event Viewer for errors...

Also if you can logon, turn off Automatically Reboot, maybe you can get a BSOD with an error code, instead of a reboot...

If you can't, only alterrnatave I can think of is a repair install...

Edit:***

Forgot one try loading the Last known good...

If you can start in safe mode, run spybot, ad-aware, and do a complete virus scan. There are a lot of bugs / spyware that will alter winlogon.exe.

In case safe mode doesn't work, any ideas as to what else could work?

Do you think running scan-disk in ms-dos mode would help any?

Thanks for all the posts!

Well...

If the Last known good doesn't work, then a repair install, would be the next guess...

If you are talking from a DOS or W98 boot floppy, and if it is NTFS, then scandisk won't see the drive...
