Short Version of Problem: Having trouble migrating messages from one Outlook Express to another.
Important auxiliary information: The computer(s) in the question belong to a small church currently going through major money lack. I am the office volunteer who will have to do the heavy lifting. I have no hardware background, but have no problems understanding and working with software to date.
History: End of January computer screen suddenly went black. I rebooted, it started to do the blue screen of recovery, never even made it to 33%, blacked out again and refused to come back up any at all. The person who worked on fixing the problem found that the hard drive was still fine by pulling it and installing it into another machine. General consensus was either the drivers or the motherboard. Another member had about three machines he had bought as surplus from his employer and donated them to the church. Those three machines were cannibalized and, along with the old hard drive, installed into one of the boxes, hopefully making a new machine in workable condition which I gain access to the middle of March. The old hard drive shows as a separate folder under the C drive and as far as I can tell everything is there including the database I was working in when the machine went blooey.
The old operating system was Windows 98. The new one is Windows 2000. I don't know what version of OE was on the old system, I thought (!?!) it was 5, but not sure. The version installed on the new one is OE5. And, not sure, but if it matters, previously we had MS Office 98 installed, now we have Office 2000.
I am trying to move the old emails from the "old hard drive" to the current OE installment. I tried importing from OE 4 but got the error message that the folder was empty. I tried importing from OE 5 but got the same error message. Having gone to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, I created a folder on my desktop labeled Mail then copied in the folder located in C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{EE04D340-DA0D-11D3-9714-8793E31A7173}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. I tried dragging and dropping this folder into the In-box in OE as suggested by MS. I tried importing from this folder instead of the original location. Consistently I get told that the folder is empty. Somewhere along in there one of these methods, and I honestly forget which one, imported the folders I had set up, but none of the contents that should be there.
I searched My Computer for *.dbx files and both the folders and what appears to be data are THERE, or at least something that takes up about the right amount of space is, but I can't seem to get it moved. Help?
