Trojans - Firefox won't open, IE will open but redirects

1594 Views 13 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  muppy03
Hi,

My computer is running XP Home SP3. It went "weird" earlier today!

First I noticed unrequested pages were appearing.
Then Firefox stopped opening - it appears in the list of processes for a few seconds then disappears.
I can open IE but it is being redirected when I, for example, click a google search link.
I can't open Internet Options via either the COntrol Panle or IE Tools.
I ran AVG and it virus vaulted a trojan, a registry reference to the trojan and various trackers.
I ran Housecall and it "fixed" another trojan (it had "mole" in its name).
I ran HJT and deleted three obvious redirect items.
I tried rebooting with System Restore off then switched it back on but still Firefox won't open and IE is redirecting.

I'm stumped!

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Kind regards,
Ella.

I've given Malwarebytes a try and it is finding the following threats – Backdoor.bot
Malware.Trace I take it carrying out any online purchases right now is a bad idea?
As you have seen already, there is evidence of a backdoor infection on your computer, so please read what is below carefully.

IMPORTANT
One or more of the identified infections that you have is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be secure afterwards. The system will be extremely unlikely to be returned to its pre-infection state.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Let me know what you decide.
Hi Muppy03,

I think I'll go for the re-install. When I am backing up my files is there a chance I could back up the trojan?

Thank you for your assistance.

Kind regards,
Ella
I think I'll go for the re-install. When I am backing up my files is there a chance I could back up the trojan?
Your files eg docs, pictures, music are generally safe. Your system files will be replaced with the reinstall so that is also ok. The main thing to be wary of is backing up things downloaded that you are not 100% sure of. Make sure you scan them before replacing back on the clean computer.

I hope this helps.

On a side note make sure you have all the drivers that will be needed before you start eg: chipset, audio, video, network adaptors.
Ok.

Thanks for your help. Enjoy the holidays!

Kind regards,
Ella
